Rockscapes to Cloudscapes...and a few moments along the way
by James Cowlin

Down the road from our home in Oracle, Arizona, is an artist community called Rancho Linda Vista. About a year ago I was invited to hang a show of my photographs in their gallery. Since I hadn't done a show in several years, I took the opportunity to review what I have been shooting recently and incorporate my newest work with photos from the US Route 89 project.

The photographs span twenty years. The large framed prints are from my Rockscapes series of landscape photographs from the US Route 89 Project. Every landscape I encounter has a unique signature of texture and color which I have tried to capture in these images. I deliberately eliminated the horizon which makes the scale of the photograph more difficult to discern. I concentrate on detail to reveal the beauty that I see.

Lately my eyes have shifted upward with a series of Cloudscapes that depict my exploration of the endless variety of forms and colors of clouds and the emotions they evoke.

In between the rocks and clouds are a bunch of snapshots I call "Moments". For the last couple of years I have taken to carrying a small camera with which to respond spontaneously to fleeting images. When something catches my eye, I shoot quickly and capture a small moment in time.

As an organizing principle, I have chosen to think of this show as a book. Each four-foot section of gallery wall is a page. The first chapter is composed of Rockscapes landscapes. Then you encounter a foldout section of pages of  "Moments" photographs. The final chapter is five pages of Cloudscapes, introduced by two transitional landscapes with clouds.

The common thread through these pages is the excitement I feel every time a print emerges from the printer. Each new image is an expression of hope that my intention to capture a moment of beauty will be apparent to the viewer. If any one of the photographs grabs your attention and lingers in your mind, then I have succeeded.

Rockscapes to Cloudscapes...and a few moments along the way will be in the Rancho Linda Vista Gallery through the end of February. There will be an opening reception on Sunday, February 9th from 2 to 5 pm. Send me an email if you need directions to the gallery and I'll be glad to give you a personal tour of the show.

2014 Calendar-Clouds
When it came time to put together a calendar for 2014, it seemed natural to look at the cloud photos I have been shooting recently. This calendar may seem like a departure from what you know of my photography. For me it is an extension of what I have been doing since the beginning. Only this time I am looking above the horizon instead of below.
