A Sampling of Summer Events Along US Route 89
by James Cowlin

One of the things that we look forward to on a road trip is attending local events. Sometimes we just happen on them as a serendipitous surprise and sometimes we plan our itineray so that we can join in the fun. If you are the planning type, here is a sampling of events to consider for your summer road trip on US Route 89.

This is by no means a comprehensive list. It barely scratches the surface of all there is to do along highway 89. I have included links to the event calendars where you can search for events that appeal to you.

Also, check the US Route 89 blog every week. I post an Event of the Week every Monday on the home page.

Roadside Diversions Map on the US Route 89 Blog
US Route 89 Roadside Diversions Map by James Cowlin

For the past thirty-seven weeks, I have been publishing one blog a week featuring a place to visit along US Route 89. I call them Roadside Diversions since most them can be seen in a few minutes or a couple of hours at most. A few are well-known but most are hidden gems we have discovered during our travels. All together they are what make traveling on highway 89 so special.

I have been searching for a way to index these stories. A map seemed like an ideal solution. Thanks to Google Maps and a Wordpress plug-in, you can now find all of the Roadside Diversion mapped out on one page. When you are planning a road trip, you can consult the map to see what special locations are along your route. When you click on the place marker, a box pops up with a link to the blog post.

The beauty of this map is that it is totally interactive. You can zoom in to see the specific location. Switch to satellite view and zoom right down for a 3-D view in some locations. Use the terrain view for details of the topography.

When you have a chance, take a look at the Roadside Diversion Map. Play around with it and then tell me what you think of it. Is it fun? Is it useful? Send me an email with your suggestions or leave a comment on the page. Thanks.
