Appealing
to the
Millennials

A couple of months ago in Eventful, we looked at what young professionals are interested in when attending an event. Recently, Kelly Parisi wrote an article for Meetings and Conventions that we found rather interesting that focused on what Millennials want in a hotel. And so you know you're talking about the right consort, the Millennial Generation (or Generation Y) are those born from the early '80s through the early 2000s.

Parisi says they are looking for five things: authenticity, life-changing experiences, free Wi-Fi and food to go (who isn't?), online ratings and real-time feedback.

Authenticity: "Millennials want to feel connected to their environment. Hotels should be authentic to their destination, rather than provide the same product in every location."

Life-changing experiences: "It's more than the number of room amenities or fancy shampoo and slippers they will be receiving. They want to walk away changed."

Free Wi-Fi and food to go: "It shouldn't even be a question: Wi-Fi should be free. An even better experience would be a relaxed lounge or Starbucks-type atmosphere where we can plug in and relax after traveling. Millennials are always on the go and can't afford the time or expense of table-service restaurants for every meal. To-go food options are perfect for their lifestyle."

Online ratings: "Millennials have had access to the Internet for so long, they can't remember what life is like without it. It is very important for hotels to have good online ratings."

Real-time feedback: "Millennials look to social media and real-time feedback to see what others are saying about different hotels. If a hotel doesn't have a Twitter or Facebook page, I assume they don't have a solid brand. It's almost as bad as not having a website."

Our Core Value #1: Always Be On

Quality Education at Wynn Las Vegas

They say, and usually with amazing accuracy, that you don't want to see how the sausage is made. Normally, peeling back the curtain and seeing that the Great and Powerful Oz is just a man can be disconcerting. But what if you get a sneak peak and learn that what you see is even more impressive than you thought?

NHS Global Events Sourcing Coordinator Katie Kot came away with just that impression during an education trip to Wynn Las Vegas. As Katie put it, "Being there gave me a better idea of the standard of service that our groups will experience. It was amazing to see how facile everyone is about providing such detail. Quality is second nature to everyone there."

Where to begin?

"The catering was incredibly detailed and I had some of the best food I've ever tasted," Katie said. "And the bread. I can't believe it tasted that good. The chefs showed incredible coordination when preparing food for a group."

Another aspect of the catering operation that impressed Katie was that tables and chairs are replaced every few months and the table cloths are custom made.

She also believes that Wynn Las Vegas might be staffed by mind readers. "They are so kind and exude a level of etiquette rarely seen. And they anticipate everything. They always think ahead and can predict what their guests will want the next day."

Katie had one more eye-opening experience at Wynn Las Vegas - a backstage tour of Le Rve - The Dream. It's Wynn's in-the-round show featuring aquatic ballet and gravity-defying stunts.

Katie Kot is ready to share more about how Wynn Las Vegas could meet your group's needs.

Our Core Value #2: The Best Idea Doesn't Exist Yet

Hop Out of Line: TSA PreCheck

We love getting tips from those we work with in the meetings business, especially if it means you will benefit from it. So high praise goes to Jan Wachtler, Executive Director of the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians, who called this to our attention. Says Jan, "If you have enjoyed complementary TSA PreCheck status from an airline, this complementary status will cease to exist January 1, 2015 and you will go through regular check procedures at all airports."

You will go through regular check procedures at all airports!! Those could be the most frightening words in the English language.

But where Jan sows despair, she also brings sunshine.

"TSA PreCheck is an easy system to complete and does require an in-person visit to your local TSA PreCheck office. The process is not onerous, in fact, I completed it in 15 minutes in downtown Chicago. But it does require you to complete an online form, which is then verified in person, at which time you will be fingerprinted and charged $85. The fee lasts for five years."

As Jan points out, "If you are a frequent flyer, it is a nice benefit. If you are pre-approved, you simply walk through the scanner. You don't have to remove your shoes and belts, but you do have to remove keys from your pockets. Items go through the scanner in your bags, so you don't have to remove liquids, computers or phones."

You can visit www.tsa.gov/tsa-precheck for more information. And, as much as we'd like to take the credit, you can thank Jan as you breeze through security.
