How Does the Gospel Spread?

Quick Quiz: How does the gospel spread?

Juggler Dave

            a. Evangelistic campaigns

            b. Juggler Dave

            c. Tracts and printed media

            d. Tele-/radio evangelism

            e. Gospel conversations with strangers

            f. Active, credible Christians in relation with others

The truth is, God uses all of these means-and more! But most often, faith builds slowly over several weeks, months, or years when an unbeliever is in relationship with a believer-especially a newer believer. (Verify this at your next gathering.)

The relationship can be built on friendship, similar interests/hobbies, living in the same neighborhood, family connection, or sharing the same work or school world. And the relationship is most spiritually fruitful when it involves an active, credible Christian.

Credible Christianity is how Paul repeatedly challenges believers to live in Titus ("doing what is good"); he wants people of faith to be good people! This is so feasible, and something we can totally encourage our church people to be and do!

Studies show:

  • Effective gospel-sharing is more relational than verbal (though "no one comes to Christ through charades"-Pastor Phil Ward, Golden Hills Church, 7/19/15).
  • The evangelist does much more listening than talking and vocalizes suggestions more than propositions.
  • Christianity is more caught than taught, so a genuine love for Christ, an authentic (growing, but imperfect) faith, and a love for people matter a great deal.
  • In relationship, evangelistic conversations usually arise situationally. The message is less often a rehearsed theological method from a book or prepackaged evangelistic formula, though the core of the gospel will be clearly explained over time.
So spreading the Good News does not normally require juggling daggers, feats of bravery, or certification; it simply requires credible believers sharing their love for Jesus and their lives in relationship with others. This is the primary way the gospel spreads.

Praises and Prayer Requests for CPW Day of Prayer and Fasting, Tuesday, August 11th

Praise God for the arrival of Joel Slater and family to San Francisco!  Joel and Holly were sent by their home church, Fair Oaks Church, in Fairfax, Virginia, to plant a church in San Francisco. Joel and Fair Oaks are seeking partnership with Converge PacWest in this plant.  Joel and Holly have been assessed and recommended as church planters through the Converge's Assessment Center (hosted by Golden Hills Community Church). They will be meeting with the CPW Church Starting Team this month to review their plans and partnership.
The family made their drive from Fairfax via a "camping vacation adventure" to reach California and start Mission Bay Church (www.missionbay.church). Their team is comprised of three more families that are called to "make Jesus famous in the city, one changed life at a time," as their mission states. Pray for housing and early steps of their church launch!

Thank God for the progress being made on Grace Church in Tracy's new church building!   Construction is ongoing and the church family will be meeting on Saturday, Aug. 15, to write prayers or verses on the beams and floor as a type of building dedication. Pray that construction continues without issue and within budget.

Please continue to pray for Pastor Pat Gordon, his wife Michelle, their family and their church (Crosspoint Community, Santa Rosa).
Pat's latest update given to the church on July 26:
"Lately, I have experienced an ongoing dry cough, significant shortness of breath, muscle weakness, extreme fatigue, and lightheadedness. I even need to use oxygen at times. However, both the cough and the shortness of breath have subsided considerably. It's like God has stayed off those things a bit, giving me a brief reprieve.
"This experience continues to be a roller coaster ride for me and my family-both emotionally and physically. I know this has been hard on all of you as well.
God has definitely extended my life past what the doctors expected; however, once the transfusions stop working, and this is to be anticipated, I will have about 1-3 weeks to live.
"I understand that God could perform a miracle and heal me-we're all praying for that. However, that may not be in the plan. No matter the outcome, God has done so much good and will do so much more through this trial.
"We continue to appreciate your prayers, notes, and encouraging words."

Pray for Pastor William and Benjie Taghap, founders of Journey Community Church, Milpitas, as they move to Tagbilaran, Bohol, Philippines, on Sept. 7th where William will be a teaching pastor at Family Christian Fellowship and work with The Timothy Initiative (TTI) discipleship program with Converge Philippines.  We're thankful to God for the 20+ years William has served CPW - as a LEAD Team Head Coach, a church planter, an interim pastor, an Overseer, and more!  You're invited to join the Taghap farewell celebration in Milpitas on Aug. 29th as we share our gratitude and swap fun memories!

After 14 years of faithful service with Calvary Baptist Church of Turlock, Pastor Rusty Lyon resigned to take the role of Lead Pastor with the Faith Community Church of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. A gathering to honor and offer appreciation for Rusty and Karin's ministry will be held on Sunday, Aug. 16, at 3:00 pm. Rusty also participated and served with CPW on the Nominating Committee, the Men's Retreat Team, the LEAD Team, and as its Moderator. Please pray for the Lyons and for Calvary Baptist Church as they adjust and seek God's direction and power for continuing Kingdom advancement.

Pray that Church Board Members will be well equipped and informed at the upcoming Church Board Retreat at Calvary Baptist Church in Turlock, Oct. 23-24, with Dr. David Clark of Bethel Seminary and key CPW Leaders offering instruction.

Join us in praising God for CWW's most recent staff addition of Dr. Robin Holland.
Converge President Scott Ridout and National Ministries Executive Director Dr. Michael Henderson have announced the Director of Diversity position has been offered to and accepted by Dr. Robin Holland. He begins in this part-time position August 3.

Holland will continue in his pastoral role at Living Hope Baptist Church, Aurora, Colorado, and will be the voice for racial reconciliation and cultural intelligence for Converge.  Pray for the Church's impact on lives, families and our culture as we adapt to the realities of the recent Supreme Court Decision granting equality to same-sex marriages throughout our land. May this be a time for the Church to strengthen its resolve to share grace and truth in gospel-based ministries! For helpful input for pastors and churches, see the work being done and counsel offered by Converge MidAmerica. Also watch for the encouraging and inspiring article in our (hard copy) newsletter to be distributed in September!

A new resource for CPW pastors...

We are pleased to announce that Converge PacWest (CPW) has joined with QuietWaters Ministries to bring you the CareLine.

The CareLine is a professional and confidential consulting resource for Converge PacWest pastors and their families, provided free of charge. Twelve (12) hours a day, seven (7) days a week, the CareLine answering service puts you in contact with one of QuietWaters' licensed, doctor or master level counselors with personal experience in ministry to talk about a personal or congregational issue. The counselors provide assessment, consultation and referral when you have personal, congregational, or ministry concerns and problems. You simply call the toll-free number 888-814-5550.

Examples of when to use the CareLine:

  • "A counseling situation I needed advice for"
  • "Depression, marital problems"
  • "Info about potential for violence in a bi-polar person"
  • "Concern with an adult daughter"
  • "A family member depressed and talking about life not worth living"
  • "Congregant possibly suicidal"

The CareLine is provided to help you lead with strength . . . "A wise man has great power, and a man of knowledge increases strength; for waging war you need guidance, and for victory many advisers." Proverbs 24:5-6 (NIV)
