Starting and Strengthening Churches

What lives matter?

Lives are being lost, and battle lines are blurred. Minority communities are feeling and aggressively expressing their grief, frustration, and fears. Law enforcement is defensive and self-protective. The anglo evangelical church is conflicted... and largely quiet. In the next two paragraphs, I'd like to introduce two thoughts to the conversation.

I'll begin by saying actions are more important than words. Jesus demonstrated his love for us (Romans 5:8). First, Christians must seize this opportunity to demonstrate the barrier-shattering love of God by our actions individually* and corporately.** These activities will likely happen off-camera and will not catch the attention of the frothy-mouthed mediamongers, but they are a critical piece of who we are and what God has asked us to do. And second, in addition to showing love across cultural and ethnic lines, Christians need be engaged in active listening and life learning. There is a context for all this angst, and there are bad players on every side of the argument, but the injustices and inequities of the past just won't seem to expire, and full reparations have not been made, nor can they be. Though this does not justify bad behavior, it reminds us of our society's need for key elements of the gospel: a Savior, grace, repentance, redemption, forgiveness, and reconciliation. These are factors that the world will never experience or duplicate without Jesus.

I'll end by saying words are still important. While we act and listen, God also expects us to speak truth, light, and life into issues of our day. You'll find opportunities to speak up around a dinner table, at the water cooler, at the salon, on Facebook (respond now, if you like), and maybe even at an All Lives Matter demonstration!

Let's get busy reconciling all people to God and one another through the cross of Jesus Christ,

Prayer Requests for CPW Day of Prayer, Tuesday, January 12
  • Pat Gordon, Lead Pastor of Crosspoint Church in Santa Rosa, medical update: "We have encouraging news to share as we start this new year.  Pastor Pat is home and feeling better every day.  His color and stamina are returning. His immune system is  working again and he no longer requires hospice care... Pastor Pat was near death on several occasions but never gave up hope.   Pat's medical team now describes him as 'stable'.  Doctors now classify his diseases as chronic MDS (He is no longer in the AML category at this time).  He is not undergoing treatment and is no longer dependent on blood transfusions. The medical team cannot medically explain exactly why he is stable, nor are they willing to speculate on how long he will remain so. Pat and Michelle know they have, and continue to, experience the presence of the Lord in ways they have not experienced before..." ~ Assoc. Pastor Mike Baker (See Christmas Eve picture above with Michelle, Kimberly, and Pat Gordon)
  • Pray the upcoming, Jan. 11-13, Pastors' and Wives' Retreat in Pismo Beach and Santa Maria will encourage and inspire our church leaders to be Spirit-led and skilled as they love and lead congregations to glorify God and effect life and community transformation here, near, and far away.
  • Praise God for recent dynamic spiritual and numerical growth at Faith Community Christian Church (Fremont); for new appointment of South Bay LEAD Team Coach, Pastor Craig Selness of Cornerstone (San Jose); for Jan. 4 launch of The Church at Antioch with more than 250 in attendance with Pastor Chris and Emery Williams (see picture to the left); for transition of Grace/Gracia (Tracy) from longtime church building to their temporary site, The Grand Theater, while a new facility is being constructed; and beginning of new CPW Internship Academy that will begin focusing on youth ministry (to be introduced at Pastors' Retreat).
  • Continue to pray that God will lead us to realize...
