A biblical response to immigration
|
| | Mission on Our Doorsteps |
I think you would agree that too many white evangelical churches were on the "wrong side" of American slavery and of the civil rights movement. It's impossible to right that wrong, but hopefully we are not repeating that wrong when it comes to current immigrants! Check out the two-minute video ( click image above). Also, get informed through the relevant resources that are available on the CPW website! Some seeds for thought: - "Welcoming the stranger... is the most often repeated commandment in the Hebrew Scriptures, with the exception of the imperative to worship only the one God" (Immigration and Theology, Orlando Espin, 46-47).
- A "stranger" in the Old Testament, according to Tim Keller, should be understood as an "immigrant" (Generous Justice, 193).
Though the political issues surrounding immigration are not simple, there can be little doubt about the Christian's responsibility to love our neighbor. Might God be challenging you to help your church get on the "right side" of this mission opportunity?
Trusting Jesus to lead us,
David Yetter
Executive Minister

CPW Prayer and Fasting Day, Tuesday, February 11
|
Pray for wisdom, safety, endurance, and fruitfulness for the team from Berean Bible Church in Atascadero who will be partnering with the Faith Care, and for the team from NewCov in Fresno who will be partnering with First Baptist Church of Maissade to serve in Haiti this month.
Pray for Fair Oaks Church. Pastor Steve McCoy in Concord resigned as their Senior Pastor, and Pastor John Merritt has agreed to serve as their Interim Pastor.
Pray for the upcoming Converge PacWest Men's Retreat that will take place March 7-9 at Mount Hermon Christian Conference Center in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Ask God to bring salvation and cause spiritual growth in many men through this retreat, and to empower keynote speaker Brad Bell to challenge and encourage the hearts of the men who attend. Pray that Better Gospel Sharing, Better Church Health, and Better Pastor Fitness continues to become a reality in our district.
Ask God to open doors for the gospel, so we will see people respond to Christ's invitation to salvation and be baptized -- with a goal of 750 baptisms this year (each church baptizing 5% of their weekend attendance)!
We are asking the Lord to identify a Community and Spiritual Development Trainer who might serve us and our Haiti ministry partners in Maissade, Haiti.
