Greetings!
Only time will tell if March will come "in like a lion and out like a lamb", but PPGGNY caters to all members (be they lion or lamb!), and this month's programs should prove to be useful to gift planners of all levels.
Last month we focused on the left side of our brains (the "lion" side), with a primer on gift planning tools and a further focus on a key charitable gift option: the charitable gift annuity. This month we focus on the right side of our brains (the "lamb" side), homing in on the sensitivities of our donors (key to making the best possible ask), and the sensitivities of our colleagues and other audiences in educating (i.e. training) them to become more familiar with types of planned gifts and how to broach the subject with their prospects and donors.
I hope you will join us on March 20th.
Alexandra P. Brovey, J.D. LL.M.
PPGGNY President
"It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest." Adam Smith

ASK THE PRESIDENT
Q: Which side of the brain - left or right - is more critical to success as a gift planner?
A: You can probably guess the answer...to be a successful gift planner you need to use both sides of your brain. We all know someone who is an expert in every area of gift planning and tax techniques that exist. But without the ability to make somewhat complex stuff both understandable and relevant to a prospective door, the knowledge may be wasted and gifts never closed.
On the other hand, we probably know someone whom every donor loves, who always has a full schedule of visits, but is unable to close many gifts. This person may lack the knowledge and training for what to listen for, how to listen, and what options to suggest based on what the prospective donor has shared.
Finally, we hopefully all strive to be - and surround ourselves with -successful gift planners (this definition would capture major gift colleagues with gift planning knowledge and skills) who are able to apply their technical expertise to assist their donors in finding the right asset to donate at the right time to fund the right gift.
If you would like to submit a question for "Ask the President", please send me an e-mail.

MARCH 20 EVENTS
Speaker: Andrea Kihlstedt
Asking individuals for gifts in person is the single most effective way to raise money. But asking people for gifts makes many staff members and volunteers uneasy.
In this workshop, Andrea Kihlstedt will introduce you to a system of personal Asking Styles that will help you become a more effective and comfortable asker.
- You'll learn your own asking style and how to use it for better results
- You'll become more sensitive to the styles of your donors, and
- You'll explore a new non-presentational approach to "The Ask"
Come prepared for an engaging and participatory session.
Andrea Kihlstedt is co-founder of Asking Matters, an innovative Web site that provides the information and motivation people need to get out and ask. She is also a nationally known author, trainer, speaker and coach.
She has written three books on fundraising. Her first book, Capital Campaigns: Strategies that Work, now in its third edition, has become a standard reference in the field. Her second book, How to Raise $1 Million (or More!) in Ten Bite-Sized Steps, is an excellent resource on fundraising for board members.
Andrea's new book, released this spring, Asking Styles: Harness Your Personal Fundraising Power, lays out a system of personality styles for fundraising. It is getting rave reviews from novices and experts alike. read more

A Gift Planning Training Guide
Speaker: Alexandra P. Brovey
Over the past 15 years, Alex has had the privilege of training fundraising colleagues, staff, boards, committees and other constituents at four nonprofit institutions. She will share some ideas and tips, using real training scenarios as examples, to better enable you to train your colleagues (and others) to give them a solid working knowledge of gift planning.
Alexandra Pia Brovey is the Senior Director of Gift Planning at the North Shore-LIJ Health System Foundation. She is currently serving as PPGGNY's President.
Alex has 20 years of legal and charitable gift planning experience, and she has served as PPGGNY Vice President, co-Chair of NYPPS 2010 and Chair of NYPPS 2011, and previously served as Vice President of the Central Pennsylvania Planned Giving Council. more
Alex will be joined by senior fund raising professional, Christina Bishop-Feeny, who is currently Director of Development for the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute, one of our region's largest cancer programs. Christina will offer critical feedback on training formats and presentations, based on extensive experience raising major gifts at three academic medical centers, North Shore-LIJ, NYU Langone Medical Center and Montefiore-Einstein, as well as other institutions in the non-profit sector.
Note: The meal of the day will be Chicken Piccata.

Update on PPGGNY LinkedIn Group
|
Our group is up to 130 members, including three new members in the last week.
It's easy to join; just click on Groups and type in PPGGNY in the search box and our group will come up and you can join, or click here.
And it's useful. In addition to regular postings of news articles and events of note, you can also pose questions to the group by starting a discussion. I recently asked if anyone had recommendations for vendors who could help with a house clean-up and sale and got several very helpful leads about folks who perform that work in the New York area. This was initially to help the children of a decedent whose home will come to the Library once they have cleaned it out, but I also was able to share the information a day later with a donor who happened to mention that he is moving and needed the same service.
Please consider joining the PPGGNY LinkedIn Group and stay connected!
