Greetings!

Winter is upon us, but with Valentine's Day and Mardi Gras approaching in February, we are reminded that Spring will soon be on its way; a time for new life and new beginnings.

PPGGNY is embracing that theme with a two-part seminar series: Introduction to Planned Giving, Part 1, in February, followed by Part 2, in April. Perennial favorites Ellen Estes and Davida Isaacson have graciously agreed to return as faculty; both are consistently popular seminar speakers. In addition, for our most experienced members, we will offer two Masters Forums, also scheduled in February and April.  So, regardless of whether you are new to the field, or a veteran, PPGGNY has exciting programs coming up to help you renew/refresh your skills.

The lunch program this month will feature an update on trends about a key planned gift option, the charitable gift annuity. Please join us for that program, and networking opportunities, on February 20th.

ASK THE PRESIDENT

Q:  Why do gift planners love what they do?

A:   Is it the 3-hour lunches at IHop? The tea and cookies in the 50s-style kitchens? Or perhaps taking a donor to a doctor's visit? Maybe, for some of us, but for me it is about helping others do good...and in the process winning over (converting) a few good people who do not see the value in planned gifts in today's bottom-line world. Please share your thoughts & stories.

February 20th Seminar

Introduction to Gift Planning: Part 1

 Ellen Estes

This session will be a basic introduction to Planned Giving. We will discuss what "Planned Giving" is really all about and why it is important for your organization.   We will review the assets donors can use to make gifts, how they can give, and some of the gift options that may be especially attractive in our current environment. We will also discuss who are your best planned giving prospects, and how to get started in planned giving.

Ellen G. Estes, LL.B., a graduate of the Yale Law School, started her career as an estate planning and tax attorney. She then became Legal Counsel to the Campaign for Yale, and later served as the first Director of Development of the acclaimed Long Wharf Theatre in Connecticut.

Ellen founded Estes Associates to provide consulting services on major and planned gift matters to non-profit organizations nation-wide. Ellen is a regular speaker at professional conferences around the country and is also widely recognized for her no-nonsense, basic seminars, Planned Giving - Plain and Simple™.

Ellen was awarded the prestigious David M. Donaldson Distinguished Service Award by the Planned Giving Group of New England in 2008.

February 20th Luncheon
CGA Trends, Nationally & Locally

"Nuggets of marketing gold are found in the most recent national survey by the American Council on Gift Annuities. For example: how old are typical annuity donors, are gift annuities favored by women, how much remains after an annuitant's life for use by charities, and have the Great Recession and record-low interest rates made gift annuities more or less attractive for donors and for charities in 2013? Plus, what do you want ACGA to ask in the gift annuity survey this fall?"

Ron Brown

Ron Brown, a Board member of ACGA, chair of its Research Committee, and a member of the Rates Committee will make this presentation.

Ron has served as Director of Gift Planning at four leading charities: Princeton University (1996-2011), the National Wildlife Federation (1992-1996), United Way of America (1987-1992) and from January 2012 to the present, Fordham University. He is currently a volunteer Board member and chair of the Research Committee for the American Council on Gift Annuities. In that capacity Ron was principal author of the 2009 Survey of Charitable Gift Annuities (ACGA: 2010). He is also a member of the ACGA Rates Committee and the CANARAS Gift Planning Council as well as a PPGGNY Board member. read more.

Note: The meal of the day will be baked fish.

Feature Article
Legislative Update We have a new tax act - The American Taxpayer Relief Act (ATRA), which became law on January 2, 2013.  By now we have all undoubtedly received numerous summaries of this new law, and some have even provided comments about anticipated effects on charitable gifts. The PPP website contains a good Legislative Update. Click here to view the page.
