Greetings!
What a fall it has been! An election, superstorm Sandy, and expiring tax provisions...Oy Veh! We share some ideas for our donors in these uncertain times in our Feature Article. And, as always, we are pleased that Jon Tidd will join us at this month's meeting. Happy holidays to all, and stay tuned for some congressional action...if there is any.
Alexandra P. Brovey, J.D. LL.M.

ASK THE PRESIDENT
Q: If Congress fails to act, and we all fall over the "fiscal cliff" on January 1, 2013, is all hope lost for gift planners and for our organizations?
A: Absolutely NOT! While some are predicting a recession, many hold high hopes that Congress will act. There are still 31 days in December, and even if tax rates increase our donors will have more incentives to make gifts and claim tax deductions. Plus, as most of us know, the #1 reason donors make gifts is to support an organization's mission. Tax deductions weigh in further down the list of motivations.

| PPGGNY EVENTS IN DECEMBER
Welcome Back Jonathan Tidd, Esq.!

Jon Tidd has been our December speaker for many years, and every year he attracts huge audiences and receives outstanding reviews. This year Jon returns to present a 2-part masters-level Seminar plus his annual Gift Planning Quiz at our holiday Luncheon.
Jonathan Tidd, Esq. is a leading lawyer whose practice is specialized in advising organizations on charitable gift planning issues. His clients include a wide range of educational, healthcare, arts, human rights and social service organizations. Jonathan was a presenter at the first 18 National Conferences on Planned Giving.
Jonathan's articles on charitable gift planning have appeared in the Journal of Taxation, Estate Planning, Taxes-The Tax Magazine®, Trusts & Estates, and other professional journals. Formerly, Jonathan served as Planned Giving Director for New York University. Jonathan is a member of the Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana and New York Bars.
Seminar (Note: Masters-Level content)
December 19, 2012, 10:00 - Noon, 3 West Club
Part I: Cases & Problems in Gift Planning
Jon will discuss an array of real-world cases and problems based on his personal experiences with donors and charities, with references to the tax code, IRS rulings and court cases. Issue identification is one of the skills that will be particularly emphasized during these case presentations.
Part II: Ethical Questions in Charitable Gift Planning
During this session Jon will pose a series of questions that will be familiar to, and should resonate with, development officers. These questions will raise ethics issues under New York rules of professional responsibility for lawyers.
Luncheon
December 19, 2012, 12:30 - 2:00, 3 West Club
Jonathan Tidd's Annual Gift Planning Quiz
Jon has been presenting his Annual Gift Planning Quiz to PPGGNY audiences for many years, and is one of the highlights of our program year. Once again he will challenge you with a series of questions that cover the whole spectrum of gift planning issues that involve tax and/or legal implications...and provide the answers (at the end of the program).

PPP Update
PPGGNY is joining the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning (PPP) and other philanthropic partners in the Charitable Giving Coalition at Protect Giving-DC Days on December 4th and 5th to voice strong support for the charitable deduction.
This Capitol Hill fly-in event aims to bring over 200 "citizen lobbyists" to Washington, DC during the lame duck session of Congress to meet with Senators and Representatives and their staff to explain the impact that a cap on the charitable deduction will have on nonprofits and the communities they serve. Vikki Jones, our Vice President and Ron Brown, a board member, are planning to attend this event. Please e-mail us if you are planning to participate.
