Greetings!

Thank you for the positive feedback! Those who attended our Fall programs have been pleased with the great topics presented to date. We will continue to offer programs you requested. In November we will feature Anne Melvin who will present an interactive seminar on negotiation. Our luncheon program will focus on elder care issues. In December we will welcome back Jonathan Tidd, Esq. for both a Seminar and his annual "Planned Giving Quiz".

Please join me in a heartfelt thanks to Claudine Donikian and Pentera, Inc., for stepping up their support of PPGGNY and becoming our Premier Sponsor. Thank you!

I look forward to seeing you in November and December.

ASK THE PRESIDENT

Q:  Does PPGGNY do any advocating at the state or national level regarding charitable deductions?

A:   No. However, we pay dues to the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning ("PPP") which does advocate on our behalf. Later in this newsletter there is an update on what PPP is doing at the national level.

If you would like to submit a question for "Ask the President", please  send me an e-mail.

PPGGNY EVENTS IN NOVEMBER

Seminar

November 14, 2012, 10:00 - Noon, 3 West Club

Negotiation: You Can't Always Get What You Want (but you just might find you get what you need!)

Anne Melvin, Deputy Director of Gift Planning, Harvard University

Many people think that negotiation is more art than science. Fortunately for us as fundraisers, there is quite a bit of it which IS a science. This session will break down, disassemble and examine the elements of both functional and dysfunctional negotiations.

Anne Melvin has worked as both a voluntAnne Melvineer and a professional in the field of development for the past 18 years. For the past 12 years, Anne has specialized in planned giving, negotiating and closing gifts for various schools at Harvard. She has directed the planned giving marketing program for Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences for the past nine years, tripling its lead generation in that time and revamping entirely the way it does marketing.

Prior to joining Harvard, Anne practiced real estate law in the Boston area. She is a cum laude graduate of Williams College and holds a J.D. from the Boston University School of Law.

Stacey Meshnick attended New York University where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1988. After graduating, she was employed as a caseworker in nursing homes. Subsequent to working in nursing homes for four years, she attended law school with a focus on elder law. During law school Ms. Meshnick was employed by and interned for elder law attorneys. She joined Fatoullah & Associates in 1996 after graduating from New York Law School. Stacey lectures on elder law issues and writes articles for both attorneys and laymen.

Joy R. Rivera graduated from the Hunter School of Social Work in 1999, majored in community organizing with a concentration in Gerontology. She was employed as coordinator of residential services for Project FIND, The Hamilton, located on the upper Westside of Manhattan. Joy then pursued an opportunity to manage The Lincoln Guild Housing NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community), also located on the upper Westside of Manhattan.

In 2005, Joy completed a 2-year certificate course in Geriatric Care Management from the Brookdale Center on Aging. Shortly after, Joy became an employee of Senior Bridge, which afforded her a wonderful opportunity in providing care management and serving clients with complex chronic problems.

PPP Update

PPP has joined with its partners in the Charitable Giving Coalition to sponsor a Capitol Hill fly-in event called "Protect Giving-DC Days" on December 4th and 5th to voice strong support for the charitable deduction. The event aims to bring over 200 "citizen lobbyists" to Washington, DC during the lame duck session of Congress to meet with Senators and Representatives and their staff to explain the impact that a cap on the charitable deduction will have on nonprofits and the communities they serve. There is no cost to attend the event, and participants will receive training, talking points, and other materials. Vikki Jones will be attending the DC event. If you are interested in attending, please contact Vikki.
