Greetings!
A hearty thank you to Robert Sharpe for his outstanding September 19th seminar presentation that attracted the largest seminar audience in PPGGNY's history! And it was an honor to welcome Assistant Attorney General Lisa Barbieri, Esq. as our luncheon speaker. This month we will have a high-level seminar on a timely planned gift option, the CLAT, followed by a panel who will share their real-life experience with CLATs. In the early Spring we welcome back favorites, Ellen Estes and Davida Isaacson, who (at your request) have been invited to present seminars on the basics of gift planning. I hope you will join us for these interesting programs. Finally, a special thanks to Margaret Holman, President of Holman Consulting, Inc. and Mark Kalish, President of Kalish & Associates, Inc., for their sponsorship of the Masters Forum and the Jobs Bank, respectively. Alexandra P. Brovey, J.D. LL.M. PPGGNY President |
CHANGING OF THE GUARD
Thanks to Jill Wasserman for her service as PPGGNY Vice-President; Jill is unfortunately unable to complete her term, but she will remain on the Board of Directors. Please congratulate Vikki Jones who was recently appointed by the Board to complete Jill's term of office. |

ASK THE PRESIDENT
Q: Does anybody really read my responses to post-event surveys, or am I wasting my time?
A: We certainly do read your responses! They enable the Board to gauge what programs/topics our members like; and we take many of your suggestions to heart...so based on your replies we are planning to have programs focusing on gerontology & elder care, planned giving basics, and training tools to share with MGOs and other constituents.
Please continue to respond to the surveys, and if you would like to submit a question for "Ask the President", please send me an e-mail.

Innovative CLAT Structures: Providing Economic Efficiencies to a Wealth Transfer Workhorse
Paul S. Lee, J.D., LL.M.
 | | Paul Lee |
The combination of record-low interest rates, recent IRS rulings, and transfer tax incentives that sunset on December 31, 2012 make charitable lead trusts a very attractive opportunity right now for high-net-worth individuals and their favorite charities.
You are welcome to participate in a two-hour advanced training session on the use of charitable lead trusts led by Paul S. Lee of Bernstein Global Wealth Management, one of the country's most highly regarded experts in the innovative use of lead trusts for significant wealth transfers. Topics include:
- Demonstrating to donors/clients the benefits of lead trusts for significant wealth transfers in 2012
- Designing trusts that meet donor/client objectives: grantor/non-grantor trusts; selecting a term of years and payout rate; level/back-loaded payments
- Specific examples of different types of assets that can now be transferred to CLTs to illustrate how to navigate through the tricky private foundation rules
- Investment and planning implications, with rigorous Monte Carlo analysis using Bernstein's cutting-edge Wealth Forecasting
This seminar is essential for you as well as your philanthropic planning professionals including trust and estates attorneys, accountants, trust officers, financial planners, and others. PPGGNY has applied for CLE and CPE credit (two hours), so please invite a colleague to attend.

THE CASE FOR PLANNED GIVING
You would think that with the "almost guaranteed" future revenues from planned giving campaigns that more nonprofits with strong support from loyal individuals would be involved in this form of fundraising.
Somehow, building this ongoing revenue stream is often overlooked when cash flow is tight and there are always so many pressing needs. Yet, planned gifts have saved the day for several nonprofits that started programs a while back and are now reaping the benefits as some gifts mature and offset annual campaign shortfalls or endowment market losses.
At some point it's important to get in the game, so you stop losing out on your share of the billions of dollars in bequests that are received as charitable gifts every year.
Here are just five of many reasons to put some effort into your own planned giving campaign: read more
