Greetings!

Brovey New

I have some good news to share: several of our goals set back in June 2011 have already been exceeded! This is a true testament to PPGGNY's unique mission and caring members.

First, we have exceeded our Philanthropic Committee's goal for the year, thanks to the efforts of our Co-Chairs (Barbara Diehl, Claudine Donikian and Hugh Williams) and to the generosity of our members.

Second, our Jobs Bank has listed 53 jobs in the past 8 months alone, and 23 of these were paid job postings. The rest were free postings for members, thanks to the generosity of our Job Bank Sponsor, Kalish & Associates.

Third, thanks to the efforts of our Sponsorship Committee and Co-Chairs Alan Berkowitz and Vikki Jones, and the generosity of our sponsors, we have exceeded our goal for the year.

While the Board and Committee Chairs work hard all year long, its nice to pause and reflect on success, even as we continue with the rest of our program year. Kudos to all!!

I look forward to seeing many of you on March 21st.  As always, I welcome your input and feedback at any time.

ASK THE PRESIDENT

Q: Will 2012 end positively in terms of jobs, economics and some certainty on the tax laws?
AHah! If I could answer this question correctly I would be the major donor we are all seeking or wooing!

...But in all seriousness, 2012 seems to have started off strong for many in the charitable sector (such related fields as law and financial planning), and even at PPGGNY we are hearing about (and listing) more job postings, an indication of recovery and perhaps even growth in our field of gift planning. We can only hope that this results in more and larger gifts in 2012. Some colleagues are experiencing new or resumed gift discussions that combine gift options resulting in larger gifts over longer time periods.

As for tax laws, no one can predict what will happen in 2013 and beyond. But we in the charitable realm know that for millions of donors, for almost a century, an income tax deduction is not the primary reason a gift is made.  Regardless of tax laws in effect from year to year, we can promote all the good work our respective organizations are doing, and hone in on our missions to continue to encourage donors to make meaningful gifts.

If you have a question for The President, please send us  e-mail.

MARCH 21st SEMINAR
Mission Possible: Getting in the Door and Getting What You Wanted
Speaker: Anne T. Melvin, Deputy Director of Gift Planning-Harvard University From getting the visit to getting the gift, this step by step guide will outline tips and proven strategies to help you get what you want. These principles are pulled from the latest research in social psychology and human interdynamics, and road-tested in hundreds of actual visits. Incorporating break-out groups to help you develop your own strategies, this session will give you the language and the confidence so you too can "have them at hello."

Anne MelvinAnne Melvin has worked as both a volunteer and a professional in the field of development for the past 18 years. For the past 12 years, Anne has specialized in planned giving, negotiating and closing gifts for various schools at Harvard. She has directed the planned giving marketing program for Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences for the past nine years, tripling its lead generation in that time and revamping entirely the way it does marketing.

Anne is a member of the Planned Giving Group of New England and the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning. She speaks regularly about planned giving around the country to development professionals, specializing in marketing, development techniques, and negotiation. Her hosts have included the National Conference on Philanthropic Planning, State Street Global Advisors Charitable Asset Management Gift Planning Conference, PPP of Greater Philadelphia, and The Greater Los Angeles Philanthropy Seminar. March 21st LUNCHEON
The Importance of Maintaining a Planned Giving Program for Your Institution
Speaker: Margaret Holman

In these uncertain economic times, some board members and administrators think of planned gifts as only future money or unnecessary icing on the cake. However, during the days and months following 9-11 and during the volatile markets we're continuing to experience, a strong planned gift program has meant the difference between staying open, or laying off staff, or worse: closing. Hear some of the facts about maintaining a planned gift program through thick and thin.

New York Charities May Soon Face Unfriendly AG Audits

By Jonathan Gudema, Esq.

New York State's Attorney General has made it clear that nonprofit organizations need to show good-faith compliance with NYPMIFA or face serious consequences.

New York's endowment and investment oversight laws can be confusing for nonprofit organizations. But, even worse, nonprofits risk penalties for delaying compliance. When Albany adopted the New York Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act, or NYPMIFA, in September 2010, the primary objective was to provide flexibility for endowments in coping with the challenging investment climate. Yet at the same time, the law introduced numerous regulations intended to protect donors' permanent gifts from being mismanaged or used imprudently.

As it turns out, NYPMIFA is proving to be a mixed blessing for the Empire State's nonprofits. Read the rest of the article.

Jonathan Gudema, Esq., is an attorney and planned giving consultant who has worked with hundreds of nonprofits since joining the nonprofit community in 1997 and has written extensively on endowment management and NYPMIFA on his blog.

He recently launched his own firm - Planned Giving Advisors, LLC  (plannedgivingadvisors.com) - which offers planned giving consulting and endowment/planned giving audit and compliance services. To view a recent webinar given on this topic, click here.
