Students earn awards for recycling
Students Nikhil Kothari, Cole Heydenburg, Cole Benson, Elijah Fox, Hayden Buckfire, Thalia Pierre and (not pictured) Brooke Bugajewski and Sulaimon Ahmed are recycling champs.
Taking care of the trash
Making the point that pens, markers and the like should be recycled, not simply tossed away, the fifth graders in the All The Way Robotics 2.0 team at Bloomfield Hills Middle School won a pair of awards for their efforts.
The kids, who are part of the Students to Educate and Encourage Recycling (STEER), showed off their awards in a presentation to the Board of Trustees at Monday's meeting.
The awards were presented as part of the FIRST Lego League Trash Trek Challenge, which focuses on the world of trash and what to do about it. "FIRST" is actually "For Inspiration & Recognition of Science & Technology" - a non-profit organization that seeks to get kids inspired by science and technology.
The BHMS students did a study and learned that some 60 million used pens and markers go into landfills every year. Rather than toss the trash, the kids proposed recycling the pens and developed a collection system.
For their efforts, the team received a first place Teamwork award and an Inspiration award.
And, said Supervisor Leo Savoie at the meeting, their efforts are working. A collection box for old pens and markers set up at Town Hall is full.
