U.S. Senators Question Proposed Crane Operator Certification Delay

In early July, the Crane Institute Certification Public Awareness Committee successfully rallied support from U.S. Senators, including members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP), regarding industry concern over OSHA's May 22 proposed delay of the compliance date for crane operator certification.

"There appears to be more behind the push to delay the implementation date than just questions over interpretation of the standard," said Brian S, Hope, CSP, corporate safety manager with Caldwell Tanks and CIC Pubic Awareness Committee member. "After visiting with OSHA officials, it appears that the agency desires to change the regulation in order to increase the opportunity for citations. If this truly is the motivation, OSHA has lost its focus on ensuring the safety and health of American workers, and it is a terrible blow to employers."  More

U.S-Canadian Groups Complete Pilot Test for Operator Certification

Members of the British Columbia Association for Crane Safety, the Washington State Dept. of Industry & Labor, and Crane Institute Certification met in mid-July to pilot test a crane operator certification program that meets the requirements of both Canadian and U.S. governments. The pilot testing took place at the Woodland, Wash., training facility of Industrial Training International.

"We are all committed to completing a workable process. We anticipate a smooth, easy-to-navigate system will be in place for all U.S. crane operators that want to work in BC.," said Fraser Cocks, Executive Director of BCACS.

"CIC is committed to meeting the demand for certified crane operators working in the energy sector, which is currently being driven by expanded drilling for natural gas and oil," said Debbie Dickinson, Executive Director of CIC. "We have a good plan in place for testing U.S.-based operators who want to work in Canada and Canadian operators who desire to work in the United States."
