CLASS NEWS
SOPHOMORE SERVIAM CERMONY

The sophomores celebrated their Serviam Recognition Ceremony on Tuesday night with a prayer service, where several students read about volunteer experiences.  Yara Awad read about distributing food in the Jordanian desert, Ellie Brutsche worked with children in Camp Guadelupe, Lauren Elia helped children with intellectual disabilities learn to ride a bike, Gia Lupi helped adults with disabilities with therapeutic horse riding, and Erin McGrellis volunteered with Special Olympics and teaching children to swim.  This is a small portrait of the many volunteer experiences the sophomores had in libraries, schools, hospitals, food pantries, animal rescue, Safety Town, sports camps, early childhood centers, and much more totaling 4,198 hours! The prayer service was followed by a lovely dinner put on by the Parents' Guild.  A very special thank you to Cindy Sparco for all of her hard work in setting this up and to Onesi Catering.  The Serviam program marks the beginning of what will hopefully be a life of service following in the footsteps of St. Angela.

SOPHOMORE THEOLOGY CLASS

The sophomore theology classes spent Monday, May 16th volunteering at several sites in the area.  Mrs. Field Lloyd accompanied students to the Food Bank of Delaware, where students formed an assembly line to pack more than 550 lunches!  Mrs. Ferrier took students to the Jesus House retreat center, where they helped with many of the gardening needs.  Other sophomores went with Ms. Johnson and Ms. Kane-Smith to the two child care centers run by Ministry of Caring where they played with the most adorable children, ages six weeks to five years old.

SEVENTH AND TENTH GRADE LUNCH

On Wednesday, our 7th graders were able to mingle with the 10th graders over a pizza lunch in the auditorium.  Gabriella and Dominique Kendus greeted the 7th graders and spoke about their decisions to choose Ursuline's Upper School.  They highlighted the importance of shadow days and the role they play in the process that awaits them in the fall!  The 7th graders were able to interact with the sophomores at each of their tables while they enjoyed their pizza and snacks.  Following lunch, the 7th graders were split into three groups to briefly tour the Upper School before they ventured back to class.  All of the students had a great time!

PSAT 8/9 Results

The freshmen class met on Tuesday to create their online College Board accounts and retrieve their PSAT 8/9 score report. Each girl who took the exam reviewed how they performed on the standardized test in each area (reading/writing language and math.)  In addition to the numerical results, they were able to see how the performed against other 9th graders in the nation as well as specific skill areas they need to strengthen. It was also stressed that they now have the opportunity to take advantage of the free test prep service from Khan Academy. The girls can link to Khan Academy through their College Board account and receive customized test preparation based on their PSAT 8/9 scores.  In a recent meeting with the Duke University admission representative, she highly recommended using Khan Academy for standardized test preparation because of the positive results she has seen recently. If you have questions about the PSAT 8/9 results, please feel free to contact Erin Barillare at ebarillare@ursuline.org.

FINE ARTS
Diocesan Art Show - UA Student Art on Display

This week, Ursuline Academy had the privilege of participating in the annual Diocesan Art Show at the Delaware Art Museum. There will be an Open House tonight, May 26th from 5:30 - 7:30pm, and the show will be up until May 28th. The girls who were featured worked very hard on their pieces, so make sure you come out and show your support! Our table is located downstairs,  in the main building of the museum.

A tee-rific time was had by all at Monday's Ursuline Academy 20th Annual Jim Keegan Golf Classic. We celebrated this milestone year at a new location, the DuPont Country Club, and added a Round-Robin tennis tournament. President Cathie Field Lloyd welcomed our guests, and honorary chairman, Jim Keegan, opened the outing with a prayer. Over 115 golfers, 20 tennis players, sponsors, and guests were able to enjoy this sold out event, which included a hearty barbeque buffet dinner, silent auction, and raffle prizes, all in the name of raising money for Ursuline financial aid. We wish to thank all our volunteers, staff, and even Mother Nature for a lovely day!

The other girls who participated were Morgan Thornton, Jenna Hilton, Lindsay Tucker, Sarah Prendergast, Maddie Randolph, and Meg Dombroski.  Great job ladies!!!
