"Live in harmony united in one heart and one will"
St. Angela Merici
Dear Parents, Students and Friends,
Our South African sisters will be returning home this weekend, and we will miss them greatly. One faculty member said that you couldn't tell our Wilmington girls and the Brescia House girls apart in the hall; they are truly sisters. Last evening Governor Markell greeted our Ursuline host families and guests from Brescia House at dinner. His visit was very personal, and everyone enjoyed and appreciated his kind words. I wish our sisters a safe journey home. I will not say goodbye, but hope to see you soon.
May God bless you and your families.

CULTURAL DAY
A very big thank you to all who made Cultural Day such a success this week! The following trips were enjoyed by many - there were three trips to New York to have lunch at Rockefeller Center and to see either Aladdin, An American in Paris or Wicked. Forty three students traveled to Baltimore where they visited the National Aquarium, had lunch at the Inner Harbor and then went on a cruise around the harbor area. Twenty students joined our visitors from South Africa to see beautiful Longwood Gardens. They had a ninety-minute program on biomes led by Longwood educators. And once again, students got to visit the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts where they worked on an art project and enjoyed a delicious lunch. Much appreciation to all the chaperones who made this possible! If you have ideas for next year's Cultural Day, please e-mail Ms. Kane-Smith or Ms. Ponte. Thank you!

Delaware College of Art and Design
The cultural day at DCAD was a hands-on experience for our students who enjoyed getting dirty with paint, pastel, and ink. With inspiration provided by Mr. John Breakey, Graphic Designer, the students created large scale words and phrases that express emotion and have strong "stopping power". A delicious lunch in DCAD's café followed the studio art time. ARTfully done!

Students spent the morning at the National Aquarium in Baltimore where they got to experience the wonders of the sea. They were treated to divers feeding the sharks and attendents feeding crickets to the squirting fish. After visiting the Aquarium, the Inner Harbor area offered an opportunity to have lunch and do some shopping before boarding a Spirit Cruise of the harbor. The captain of the ship gave a historical tour of the harbor where students had the opportunity to see Fort McHenry, the Domino Sugar plant, Fells Point, and the many Naval and merchant ships that were docked along the way. An exciting experience was had by all.

Wicked
One of the featured Cultural Day trips was to New York City to see the long-running Broadway show Wicked, a post-modern pastiche that acts as a prequel to L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz. The girls enjoyed some time in Rockefeller Center, having the opportunity to get lunch and shop before we headed over to Gershwin Theater for the show. We had a great time!

An American In Paris
A group of junior, sophomore and freshman students travelled to New York City for Cultural Day. They had some free time at Rockefeller Plaza to have lunch before walking to the Palace theatre to see An American in Paris. The play was excellent with great Gershwin songs, amazing dancing, beautiful sets, and costumes all working together to tell a love story.
|
Aladdin

Forty three students enjoyed the extraordinary talent, beautiful sets, special effects, and humor of Aladdin! The flying magic carpet ride was a favorite of many. Many thanks to the chaperones Holly Colon, Megan Hickey, Meg Kane-Smith, and Katie McMahon.
|
Longwood
Students from UA Wilmington and Brescia House attended Long Wood Gardens for Cultural Day on April 20th. The students had a chance to tour the gardens and attend a short lesson on Biomes held in the conservatory. The group enjoyed viewing the tulips and learning about different types of flowers.
