Dear Parents, Students and Friends,

The Ursuline School, Brescia House, is located in the heart of Bryanston, just outside of Johannesburg. With an enrollment of 930 students, it is one of the leading girls' schools in South Africa. Ursuline Wilmington is proud and honored to have our South African sisters visit with us for the next two weeks. The girls and their chaperones are acclimating to the change in time and temperature. A huge thank you goes out to the families who are hosting the girls, and everyone who is supporting this exchange. We truly appreciate your efforts. Just look at those smiles in the pictures; that says everything.

May God bless you and your families.

St. Angela, watch over all our days.

GLOBAL EDUCATION
WELCOME TO OUR SISTERS FROM SOUTH AFRICA

On Wednesday, we welcomed fifteen students and two chaperones from Brescia House - our sister school in Johannesburg, South Africa. Mrs. Neill, Mrs. Ferrier, and Mr. Frazier met the group at Philadelphia International Airport after more than 24 hours of travel. The girls were full of excitement and energy.  They were ready to take on the USA and Ursuline Academy.

We spent a few hours touring Philadelphia, visiting Old City, and enjoying the sunshine. We visited Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell before moving across the city to enjoy some Chick-fil-A on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The girls enjoyed their first meal in America!

Upon arriving to Ursuline Academy, the girls were warmly greeted by their host sisters on the steps of the auditorium. The new "sisters" quickly became inseparable and lined up to process into the auditorium for our Welcome Ceremony.

Led by senior Nina Budischak and Mrs. Neill, the delegation from Brescia House, along with their host sisters and chaperones, processed into the auditorium to the beautiful sounds of our String Quartet and loud cheers from the entire Upper School along with host families. Several of the BH girls remarked that they felt like "American rock stars"!

The ceremony included the singing of our National Anthem and the South African National Anthem, which was very moving for both our guests and student body. Mrs. Neill, Mrs. Field Lloyd & Mrs. Zogby welcomed the delegation and officially opened our exchange. Mr. Louden led our choir in singing "We Are the Voices," and the ceremony closed with the singing of our Alma Mater. Our Upper School students did an outstanding job of welcoming our South African sisters to Wilmington!

St. Ursula, protect our future.
SERVIAM

Guests Giving Back

Because they share the same mission, Serviam, our sisters from South Africa got right to work by volunteering.  They spent the afternoon at the Sunday Breakfast Mission sorting out toiletries for the less fortunate.  Their hard work was rewarded with a trip to Starbucks.  The girls were super excited because Johannesburg currently doesn't have one.

CLUB NEWS

The Multicultural Coalition and International Clubs enjoyed an interesting and informative field trip to the Shofuso Japanese House and Garden located in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia.  They toured the house which reflects conditions of seventeenth century Japan and learned the purpose and significance of all the main features of the site.  In addition to touring the house and beautiful gardens, they experienced the traditional Japanese tea ceremony which included a brief history of tea in Japan, and a sampling of  some of the teas.  Two of our sisters from Brescia House, Tammy Haa and Alexandra Amsinck   accompanied Ursuline students Lauren Boysen, Carin Colon, Katie Corbino, Destiny Dennis, Kryshell Gordy, Mary Kate Kalinowsi, Maryam Pasdar, Alex Perna, Sarah Prendergast, Maddie Randolph, Lexi Romine , Maya Showell, Elexa Thomas, Morgan Thornton, Alicia Wilson and Kay Wulah.
