Dear Parents, Students, and Friends,

One of our goals is to raise our children to be independent thinkers, to make wise, well thought out decisions, to function appropriately without constant adult supervision, and to be aware of the power of God's Spirit within them.

How do we do this as parents?  We do this by nurturing our children, with plenty of love and encouragement that has sensible structures and boundaries. We make every effort to ensure that our children attain crucial character traits such as kindness, self-control, honesty, politeness, and independent thinking. These are some of the traits to help offset harmful messages and negative social influences that our children will encounter throughout their lives.

"May the Lord grant us all the wisdom to trust only in him and not in things or in human strength: only in him."

May God bless you and your families.

PSAT 8/9

On Monday, February 29, freshmen will be taking the PSAT 8/9. They will arrive at school at the usual time and report to their testing rooms which have been announced and emailed to them. They should bring with them two #2 pencils and their calculators. As with all standardized testing, the best immediate preparation is to get a good night's sleep and to have a nutritious breakfast that morning.
Junior Parent Night

Impossible as it may seem, the time has arrived for your daughter to begin the college counseling process. One of the distinct values of an Ursuline education is that each student is given intensive individualized help through every phase of the career and college exploration, application and admission process.
Since parents are a key part of the college admissions process, there will be a Junior Parents' Night held on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at 7:00 p.m.   Mrs. Raineri's students and their parents will meet in the Gym. Mrs. Barillare's students and their parents will meet in the Auditorium.   At this meeting, our process and timeline will be explained, a packet of essential information regarding college admissions will be given, and your daughter's current transcript will be distributed. Since this is the only time when this information will be given, this is a mandatory meeting and each Junior and at least one parent or guardian must attend. The onset of the college admission process is always an exciting if anxious time for students and their parents. We are confident that you will find Junior Parents' Night highly informative and reassuring. We look forward to seeing you then.

FINE ARTS

Jacquelyn Kepley '16 and Yara Awad '18

Perfection! Jacquelyn Kepley and Yara Awad pose with the "bling" they earned by being accepted into the annual Delaware All-State Choir. This past weekend they added another honor to their resume by singing in Dover with over 100 other singers from across the state. For Jacquelyn, this year rounds out a perfect 6 years of acceptance- the most possible medals for a student. Yara accepted her 4th medal with 2 years to go. Together they make a perfect "10."

TAKE A BITE OUT OF CRIME

Did you know that art theft is the third biggest criminal enterprise in the world after guns and drugs? The students in Studio Art have researched stolen masterpieces and are hard at work reproducing their "copy" of a stolen masterpiece to raise awareness for the arts. The tradition continues with the 9th annual Great Painting Caper taking place at Ursuline Academy this spring. More information will  follow on how you can recover a stolen masterpiece and receive a reward.

BLOOD DRIVE

Ms. McMahon and Katelyn Sentman '17

A huge thank you to all of the students, teachers, faculty, and alumni who signed up to donate or volunteered. If you are still interested in being a blood donor, you can go to the Delmarva Blood Bank anytime and fill out a donor card for Ursuline.

School English Department News

The National Endowment for the Arts and The Poetry Foundation have partnered with State Arts Agencies throughout the country to develop Poetry Out Loud, a program which encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance. This exciting program helps students to master public speaking skills and to build self-confidence.

Students compete within the classroom, and then move on to a school-wide competition. School winners proceed to the state competition, and the winner at the state level advances to the national competition held in Washington, DC.

Jane Krukiel

This year, freshman Jane Krukiel ('19) represented Ursuline Academy at the state Poetry Out Loud competition at the Smyrna Opera House on February 23. Eighteen students competed from schools throughout Delaware, sharing a variety of modern as well as classic poetry. Jane recited two poems: "Bright Copper Kettles" by Vijay Seshadri and "I Hear America Singing" by Walt Whitman.

Please join us in congratulating Jane for a job well done!

THE HERREN PROJECT

Chris Herren will be a guest speaker at Salesianum on Monday, March 14th  at 7:00pm. Chris connects extremely well with the students and they are constantly asking ask us to bring him back.

Herren excelled on the basketball court becoming one of the top Division 1 prospects in the country. Herren's basketball success concealed a darker side, and his dream soon became a nightmare of addiction - first alcohol, then cocaine, finally heroin. A chaotic and often uncertain career plagued by drugs and rehab led to the NBA. Chris has been drug-free and alcohol-free since Aug. 1, 2008 and has refocused his life to support his substance-free lifestyle and now shares his story of his experiences and road to sobriety in the hopes of reaching just one person and making a difference in his or her life.

The event will be held at Salesianum and is free and open to the public. We encourage parents to attend with their children. Doors open at 6:15 pm.  For more details, please click here.
