"HAVE FAITH AND KEEP UP YOUR COURAGE"  St. Angela Merici

Dear Parents, Students, and Friends,

The start of a new year brings new goals and resolutions. Our faculty is here to help our students achieve their goals. We continually instill in students that their lives can be what they make them, and we are here to support that effort.  We encourage: Reach for your goal, your peak.  Do ordinary things in an extraordinary way, and always remember how special you are.

May God bless you and your families.

St. Angela, watch over all our days.

ALUMNAE SPEAKER SERIES

What a privilege it was to have alumna Denise Scales, Class of 1969, return for a dynamic lunchtime discussion about her career as Nurse Manager of the Christiana Care Post-Partum Unit. Denise shared stories and advice with our upper class students about her experiences as a nurse in the 1970's when the medical field was predominantly male.  Topics ranged from premature baby care, to learning various cultural traditions from the diverse families, to the importance of earning respect, not popularity, as a manager.  She also visited one of our health classes where she answered additional questions about delivery, gestational diabetes, post-natal care of mothers, and adoption. She closed with a story about applying for her nursing program.  There was only one space left and two candidates applying.  When she was selected to fill that final space, she was told it was because she attended Ursuline.

Thank you, Denise for an inspiring talk!

GLOBAL EDUCATION

SOUTH AFRICA IS COMING!!

On April 13, 2016, a delegation of fifteen students and three faculty from our sister school Brescia House in Johannesburg, South Africa will be visiting Wilmington.  We are now accepting Host Family applications for these students.  Hosting is a wonderful way to connect with our sister schools and to learn about different cultures.  Our host families often say that they get as much out of the hosting experience as they would if they traveled to the visiting school.  Plus - hosting is a great way to satisfy one of your required Co-Curricular activities for the Global Scholars Award.  Applications are due on January 8th and are available here.

EARN $$$ FOR YOUR CREATIVITY!

The Global Education and Fine Arts Departments have combined to offer students the opportunity to earn money while helping to create a legacy for our school.  We are looking for a student (or group of students) to write a closing song for our Global Education activities.  The winner of the contest will earn $150.  Check out more information here.

SERVE ON A DELEGATION

MARCH FOR LIFE

Ursuline's annual trip to the March for Life in Washington, D.C.
Students pose with signs at last year's March for Life.

The March for Life began as a small demonstration on January 22, 1974, the first anniversary of the now-infamous Supreme Court decisions in Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton and rapidly grew to be the largest pro-life event in the world.  The peaceful demonstration that has followed on this somber anniversary every year since is a witness to the truth concerning the greatest human rights violation of our time, abortion.

This year, Ursuline will continue the tradition of traveling to the March for Life in Washington D.C. A bus will pick up students at Ursuline at 7:15am on January 22, 2016, and we will return by 6:00pm. Please pack a lunch and snacks for the trip. Permission slips and fee ($20 per student) are due on January 20, 2016. For more information, contact Ms. Johnson (ljohnson@ursuline.org).
