"Never fail to render your neighbor the services that may depend on you.'      St. Angela Merici

Dear Parents, Students, and Friends,

Happy New Year!! We hit the ground running here at Ursuline. On Monday, the faculty welcomed back the Class of 2015 at our annual Back to UA Day! It was wonderful to hear about our alums' successful first semester at college and provide the senior class with details of their collegiate experiences. The event was like a mini-reunion as everyone exchanged hugs, smiles, stories, and pictures.

May God bless you and your families.

SCHEDULING FOR 2016-'17 SCHOOL YEAR

It is time to begin to schedule classes for the 2016-17 school year. We encourage each girl and her family to review the Course Selection Guide, which is now on Edline, and to discuss all course options. Please pay attention to all pre-requisites and know if you have any specific questions you can contact our teachers, our counselors, or Mrs. Butler.

The process will begin on January 12th, when each current 9th, 10th, and 11th grader will meet with her advisor to discuss the Course Selection Guide and to begin to think about the courses she would like to enroll in next year. During the weeks of January 18th -29th, teachers will be talking to students about their recommendations for next year. On February 8th - 26th, our girls will meet with their counselor and review the course recommendations, and each girl will input their course selections into NetClassroom. After the counselor meetings, a copy of the course selection card will be sent home for parents to view, and all course selections will be available to view and approve by parents on NetClassroom until March 4th.

At any time, please feel free to contact Mrs. Butler if you have any questions regarding the scheduling process.

Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge

The annual Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge at Rehoboth Beach on February 7, 2016 is the largest fundraiser for Delaware Special Olympics. For the past two years, the UA Frosty Raiders raised the most money per capita of any "Cool School" in Delaware. We are very proud of this accomplishment and would love to exceed last year's goal this year, but we need your support.

Join our team and take the plunge, or donate to the Ursuline Academy's Team "Frosty Raiders" by clicking on this link.  https://www.firstgiving.com/team/308921.

Donations, no matter how large or small, may be made to an individual team member or to the UA team as a whole. Please consider making a donation today to support Delaware Special Olympics Delaware.

All the DE Special Olympians and the UA Frosty Raiders thank you!

GLOBAL EDUCATION

SOUTH AFRICA IS COMING!!

On April 13, 2016, a delegation of fifteen students and three faculty from our sister school Brescia House in Johannesburg, South Africa will be visiting Wilmington.  We are now accepting Host Family applications for these students.  Hosting is a wonderful way to connect with our sister schools and to learn about different cultures.  Our host families often say that they get as much out of the hosting experience as they would if they traveled to the visiting school.  Plus - hosting is a great way to satisfy one of your required Co-Curricular activities for the Global Scholars Award.  Applications are due on January 8th and are available here.

EARN $$$ FOR YOUR CREATIVITY!

The Global Education & Fine Arts Departments have combined to offer students the opportunity to earn money while helping to create a legacy for our school.  We are looking for a student (or group of students) to write a closing song for our Global Education activities.  The winner of the contest will earn $150.  Check out more information here.

SERVE ON A DELEGATION

We still have a few slots open on our travel delegations: one spot left for
Peru and one slot left for our UN trip in March.  Please consider joining us!

ALUMNAE RELATIONS

This annual luncheon invites our recent graduates to gather with our current senior class and share their first semester college experiences. Topics covered included dorm life, playing a sport in college, dealing with homesickness, juggling a college workload, and more. It was a very informative discussion for everyone!

MARCH FOR LIFE

Ursuline's annual trip to the March for Life in Washington, D.C.
Students pose with signs at last year's March for Life.

The March for Life began as a small demonstration on January 22, 1974, the first anniversary of the now-infamous Supreme Court decisions in Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton and rapidly grew to be the largest pro-life event in the world.  The peaceful demonstration that has followed on this somber anniversary every year since is a witness to the truth concerning the greatest human rights violation of our time, abortion.

This year, Ursuline will continue the tradition of traveling to the March for Life in Washington D.C. A bus will pick up students at Ursuline at 7:15am on January 22, 2016, and we will return by 6:00pm. Please pack a lunch and snacks for the trip. Permission slips and fee ($20 per student) are due on January 20, 2016. For more information, contact Ms. Johnson (ljohnson@ursuline.org).

Ursuline will be hosting the mass on January 17th. Any student interested in getting involved as a reader, singer, musician, usher, Eucharistic Minister, or someone to bring up the gifts, should contact Ms. Johnson (ljohnson@ursuline.org) by January 14, 2016.
