"I am so over the top excited with the vote results to become a Sanctuary for an immigrant facing deportation. We are walking our talk. We are living our values. We are standing on the side of love," reports ACTIONN leader from the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Northern NV, Xiomara Rodriguez.
Unitarian Universalist of Northern NV Declares
Church a Sanctuary

Founding member of ACTIONN, the Unitarian Univeralist (UU)  Fellowship of Northern Nevada, voted with an overwhelming majority on Sunday to declare their church a Sanctuary for an Undocumented Immigrant facing deportation.

The church's motto, Standing on the Side of Love, was in evidence as the church's members took this bold and courageous stance to open their hearts and church as a public stance to declare the brokenness of the    immigration system in the U.S.

Extra special shout out for all their work on this goes to ACTIONN leaders: Al Ferrenberg, Kathy Lucich and Paul Lenart.

Thank you to the congregations and organizations who sent a letter of support to the UU in advance of the vote:
  • Sparks Christian Fellowship
  • St Teresa of Avila Catholic Community
  • Little Flower of St Theresa Catholic Church
  • Temple Sinai
  • Iglesia Amistad Cristiana
  • El Verbo De Dios
  • Tu Casa Latina

Sparks Considers Eliminating Requirements for Apprenticeships

ACTIONN leaders are opposed to the city of Sparks eliminating requirements for apprenticeships for plumbers and electricians in the city of Sparks.

We know that apprenticeship requirements encourage a ladder to living wage jobs. We know that apprenticeship requirements protect the quality of workmanship on our houses. We know that without these requirements the safety of our houses is in jepardy.

The Sparks City Council is discussing this issue on Monday, Nov 23 at 2 pm. ACTIONN leaders are encouraged to show up to oppose this at the Sparks City Council, 431 Prater Way and Fourth St., Sparks.

Reno Considers Reducing Apprenticeship Standards

ACTIONN leaders spoke out against proposed changes at  two "workshops" with the City of Reno, who is considering reducing standards for "trainees" for apprenticeships for Plumbers and Electricians.

We intend to do this again at the next meeting at the City of Reno, One First St, Reno, 7th floor caucus room, on

The proposed new requirement gets rid of the need for a high school diploma or a GED.

Our goal is  to increase requirements for using apprenticeships, not reduce requirements as was being proposed. We believe that such requirements not only create a ladder for living wage jobs, instead of keeping workers without skills at low wages, they also help to insure a higher quality of construction on residential and commercial properties.

ACTIONN intends to continue to be the public voice, which is obviously  usually missing on decisions such as these that affect local jobs and standards for construction in our community.

Nevada Gives $412 million Tax Benefits

In return for only 50 new workers, EBay was given $412 Million in Tax Benefits by the State of Nevada.

That is over $8 million for each job!

Where was the voice of the people of Nevada in this process?

What is the salary range for these jobs? Will they be living wage jobs or simply warehouse level wages?

ACTIONN is concerned about the lack of transparency and citizen voice in this process.
