PWCMeeting Children Lead War on Malaria
Russel Wakeman donates to the war on malaria.
Every 60 seconds, a child in Africa dies from malaria. Children in the U.S. are leading the fight against malaria with small acts of kindness that add up to millions of dollars donated to World Vision. Group Publishing donated $2 million to World Vision that was collected from Sunday School offerings. The donations were in response to curriculum designed by Group Publishing to raise awareness of the threat of malaria.

"Two million is not chump change," says Steve Haas, vice president and chief catalyst of World Vision. "Scripture is clear about the Lord's love of a cheerful giver and Group Publishing gave this donation laughing in celebration from the offerings collected by children." Children have given up their allowances, birthday money or started their own fundraisers for the cause.

Four-year-old Russell Wakeman donated money he had saved for a game to buy a bed net after hearing a presentation, "War on Malaria," at Celebration Center in Puyallup, WA. He had enough money to save the lives of two children but wanted to save the lives of four children. His mother reminded him that he wouldn't be able to buy his game. He said, "But momma, children have to live."

Another child at Celebration Center, 12-year-old Elisa Heagy, asked her uncle who owned a restaurant, if she could place a donation jar at the cash register. Heagy decorated the jar and returned several weeks later with enough money to buy several nets. Six-year-old Adela insisted on giving her birthday money even though both of her parents were unemployed.

Eight-year-old Emilie Lindgren, came to her parents in tears with $6 to buy a bed net. Her family had committed to buy 10 nets, but Emilie wanted to buy another net. Her brother, 12-year-old Andres, gave up his allowance so the family could purchase another net.

The small acts of sacrifice by children have made a big impact. "In some communities, malaria has plummeted by 80%," says Haas. "Our goal is that their would have no malaria deaths by 2015." With children leading the way, malaria deaths could end in 2015.

Christian ministry in the spirit of Jesus Christ involves sacrifice, suffering and service to others for the glory of His Kingdom. It also involves great joy in seeing lives transformed by the grace of God. It is a great privilege and blessing!

PCCNA Considers Restructuring Board
PCCNA2014meetingA year ago at the annual meeting, Board of Administration members (BOA) voted to consider a bylaw change in 2014 that would add an additional officer to the Association. The proposed change would amend the way the organization is led.

Historically four volunteer officers have provided leadership to PCCNA (chairperson, co-chairperson, secretary, and treasurer), along with seven additional Executive Committee members. At the upcoming annual meeting in Cancun, Mexico, the voting members will consider a bylaw change that adds a president's position to the slate of officers.

If approved, and if the office is filled (which is optional according to the proposed amendment), the action would be an intentional move to create a more permanent, hands-on leadership team. As proposed, the president would need to be re-elected at the end of a term, but without term limits. - Jeff Farmer, PCCNA Chairman
