With the beauty of Fall came quite a different display of awe from Mother Nature these past couple days thanks to Hurricane Sandy. I pray you and loved ones are all safe and managing the aftermath with as much ease and well-being as possible.
I took the picture to the left in Harriman State Park two weekends ago. I would imagine this looks much different now. It was so beautiful that day, and my husband and I took it all in with much gratitude.
In contemplating what to write this month, especially with the mess of this storm, awareness around the word "PAUSE" came to mind. As we were driving around Harriman State Park, we paused a lot, taking note of every beautiful sight, sound, smell and sensation of touch and taste. The partially grey sky played peekaboo with the sun casting different hues and tones of color while scurrying squirrels and chipmunks, gobbling wild turkeys, bashful deer and trumpeting geese were in company too. Many people were hiking, biking and tending campfires creating an aroma that took my mind to a place of cozy reflections. PAUSE.
In the dictionary, PAUSE is defined as a "
temporary stop". Other synonyms include:
break,
breath,
breather,
interruption,
lull,
recess. Most of us are way too busy these days and overstimulated that we hardly give ourselves time to pause. Me included. On another level, this hurricane certainly caused us all to pause whether we wanted to or not. To pause, in this case, is more accurately defined by the dictionary definition: "temporary inaction especially caused by
uncertainty" - which is what we've all been experiencing. (Oh yes, the stress of the election process is thrown in there too.)
When you are temporarily forced to stop and thrown out of "routine", just how well do you handle this? Does pausing seem normal or do you feel out of sorts? Do you feel connected or do you find yourself floundering because you don't know how to be still? Or, do you realize how tired you really are and that maybe what you were doing was not so important or necessary after all?
Just PAUSE and NOTICE.
I know I'd like to pause more often to relish the simple state of BEing and to tune in to my senses to make sure I'm tending to what matters most. How about YOU?
Need a moment to.......[pause] maybe?
