Dear Students, Parents, Teachers & Friends of Education,

Bear Creek Teachers Collaborate in Costa Rica

Seven Bear Creek Teachers were selected for a collaborative teaching experience with teachers from Costa Rica for a week in July. This trip was made possible through the relentless collaboration of Barrow's English Learner Support Coordinator Julie Eldridge and the University of Georgia Center for Latino Achievement and Success in Education (CLASE) department, this trip was made possible. The project allowed BCMS teachers an opportunity to travel to Costa Rica and visit six teachers in order to utilize the CLASE teaching method. All teachers involved from the US and Costa Rica were trained for at least 3 days at either Unicoi State Park in Helen, Georgia, Gwinnett Center, or Botanical Gardens in Athens, Georgia before the trip. The CLASE method focuses on instructional conversation, a culturally responsive pedagogy that focuses not only on academic achievement, but also language acquisition by increasing the rate and intensity of interactions with peers and expert teachers.

Each BCMS teacher was paired with a Costa Rica teacher during the CLASE training in order to collaborate on lessons. Weeks before traveling to Costa Rica, the teachers involved worked together to create lessons/task cards and discuss ideas and methods to be used when the groups paired and taught the lesson to students in Costa Rica. One Costa Rican teacher, Alvaro Cortes stated, "I would like to deeply thank you guys for such a wonderful experience. Also the CLASE team for such great encouragement and inspiration that pushed us to do our best and make every single sacrifice and effort enormously valuable and rewarding; teachers from Georgia for being supportive, patient, for letting us make mistakes, say nonsenses and always clap your hands to make us feel proud. Thank you Costa Rican partners for booking a seat for me in this club of excellent teachers even though I don't belong. Thank you all for leaving a beautiful print in every little heart of our students."

Pat said he'll return quarterly to donate 4-6 boxes of books from thriftbooks, or all he can carry in his car! We appreciate Pat and thriftbooks enthusiastic support for our new Barrow County early literacy program, the Barrow Book Partnership.
