The Buckeye Buzz

April 2016
Greetings!
Message from the Director:
As summer approaches I am thrilled to see familiar faces on the mountain and the hustle and bustle of the town. We have some great new offerings for this summer and hope you can join us in a fitness class, outdoor nature program, hike, special event, or camp. New and exciting trips and activities await our summer campers. We have been working hard for our outdoor offerings and providing special programs to better serve our community and present the natural beauty of Beech to everyone. Be on the lookout for an all new weekend event on Beech Mountain in July. This one you won't want to miss.

Easter Recap

On Saturday March 26, 2016 Beech Mountain Parks and Recreation hosted our annual Hoppy Easter Celebration at Buckeye Recreation Center! Games, activities, egg hunt, book reading, and a light breakfast were all provided to our participants. There were close to 300 attendees, which was double our attendance last year! In 2017 we hope to see the numbers grow even more so we can provide a more dynamic Easter Celebration for the community

Thank you to the volunteers who decided to contribute their valuable holiday time for this free community event. And a special thanks to Lowes Foods, Fred's General Mercantile, and Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria for their generous donations and support. We hope you enjoyed our celebration even more than we did, and join us again next year to see Peter Cottontail when he's back in town!

Weekly Wildflower Walks:  April: 22nd, 29th

April 22 (Friday) - 11am
April 29 (Friday) - 11am

Come for one, come for all.  Each week we'll experience a new set of blooms as our spring wildflowers emerge on Beech Mountain.  Each hike departs from the Buckeye Recreation Center, and we'll caravan to the trailheads together.  Our next hike on April 14th will feature the blooms and views of the Emerald Mountain Outback trails.  Please remember to dress in layers, wear shoes appropriate for hiking, and bring water/light snack.

Our last hike on the Wild Iris Trail wasn't dampened by an early spring cold snap.  Our delicate-looking flowers proved their hardiness despite the graupel (see the word of the month) and snow.  We were treated to the blooms of Carolina spring beauties, carpets of cutleaf toothwort, halberd-leaf yellow violets, and trout lily leaves were just starting to pop. New flowers are emerging each week so make sure to see them all!

Trail of the Month
April
Click for more Info

This month we recommend hiking the Southern Ridge trail in the Emerald Outback trail system.  Wild flowers are beginning to bloom, and you can see the green from the valleys making its way up the mountain.  With three breathtaking overlooks, it is a trail everyone can enjoy.
Word of the Month
Graupel

English /ˈɡraʊpəl

Graupel forms when snow in the atmosphere encounters supercooled water. In a process known as accretion, ice crystals form instantly on the outside of the snow and accumulate until the original snowflake is no longer visible or distinguishable.

The coating of these ice crystals on the outside of the snow is called a rime coating. The size of graupel is typically under 5 millimeters, but some graupel can be the size of a quarter (coin).

To tell the difference between graupel and hail, you simply have to touch a graupel ball. Graupel pellets typically fall apart when touched or when they hit the ground. Hail is formed when layers of ice accumulate and are very hard as a result.  Beech encountered graupel in April.

Special Thanks

Thank you to everyone at the TDA. Because of your generous contribution we were able to fully replace a bridge in much needed help and keep our trails open to visitors and looking great.

Hikers and visitor be sure to check out Pond Creek trail. The trail follows the creek through quiet woods and even has a few historic railroad sections.

Thank you again!
