Summertime is here, and Buckeye is bursting at the seams with things to do for all ages! Bring the family for a day on Buckeye Lake and rent a canoe, kayak, or the brand new pedaboat. Make sure you check out our trails and the newly renovated Emerald Outback trails.

We look forward to seeing you down at Buckeye. For more information or to find out about volunteering for any of the events/activities in this Buzz, please call the Buckeye Recreation Center at (828) 387-3003.

Coming Up - A Cool 5 Weekend
Don't forget to register for the upcoming "Cool 5"!

The weekend starts on Friday, June 19th! The day before the races, we will be having the Buck-a-Thon fundraiser from 2-7pm in which participants pledge a dollar for each lap they complete on the Buckeye Recreation outdoor walking track. Kids' Popsicle Relay starts at 4pm on the field outside the Recreation Center, and is FREE for kids!

The "coolest" event of the night is the Taste of Beech! From 5-7 pm, the local restaurants on the mountain will be gathering at the Recreation Center for a night full of great food samples, coupons, and menus. This food-driven event is FREE for all Cool 5 runners, and only a "cool" $5 for community members.

All races begin at 8:30am on Saturday morning at the Beech Mountain Town Hall. The "Cool 5" mile race is challenging with many scenic parts, while the 1.5 mile Fun Run is perfect for families and strollers. Bring your furry friend for our 1.5 mile Walk and Wag, which ends at Town Hall, and is followed by a party in the Bark Park to cool down! This is a great weekend to bring the family together for some outdoor activities during June, Family Fun Month on Beech!

Summer Camp
REGISTER NOW FOR SUMMER CAMP!

Each week campers will explore new adventures and fun activities. Kids will practice outdoor survival skills, learn how to fish, try different sports, experience scenic hikes, bike down several mountain biking trails, take field trips, and so much more!

We know there are many wonderful things to do in the mountains as a family, and we don't want to lock campers into a full week of camp... so we have designed our registration so that kids can chose to come for a day, a few days, or they can stay for the whole week! Although we will warn parents...once campers visit us for the day...it's hard to keep them away!

The first day of camp is June 22. Camp will run until July 31st. Monday-Friday 9 am - 3 pm. Extended hours are available from 3 - 5 pm. Register online, and download the camp schedule at www.beechrecreation.orgCall (828) 387-3003 for more information.
Recap:
Emerald Outback Grand Re-Opening

We couldn't have asked for a better day for the Emerald Outback Grand Re-Opening. Sun was out and a nice breeze filled the mountain air as the ribbon ceremony commenced and the trails were officially open t the public. Guests were given the option to free ride, or register for a guided hike or bike ride. Thanks to our hiking guides, Sean McNay and Kelsey Stines, our guests were shown the beauty of Beech! The guided bike rides included several of our most popular trails, a combination of over 3 miles. Thank you to Paul Stahlschmidt and Doug and Matthew Owen for guiding our bikers safely around the trails, and donating many prizes for the kids.

Our wonderful sponsors and organizations donated many prizes that were raffled off including: CamelBak waterproof pack covers and a bottle cage from Boone Bike & Touring, many pairs of DeFeet socks, and a large bike rack from Cool Breezy Cyclery in Charlotte.

Congrats to Patrick O'Neal on winning the bike rack

This entire event came together with the help of Tim Johnson from the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Remember, the trails are open daily to the public, at your own risk. Bring a water bottle and a new EMO map when you explore these new trails!

Welcome Summer Staff

We are happy to welcome more new Summer staff members and camp counselors to join us for the exciting summer ahead!

Logan Ramirez

Hey! I am Logan Ramirez! I live in Boone, while I am attending Appalachian State University. I am currently a senior, studying Recreation Management with a Concentration in Outdoor Experimental Education. A degree in this field will help me prepare to work with at-risk kids, teaching them leadership, service, and the value of community through outdoor activities. I come from a small town called Roanoke Rapids, in North Carolina. I enjoy playing soccer, hiking, and swimming during the summer! This is my first time working at Buckeye Recreation Center, but I am grateful for the opportunity and cannot wait to meet everyone!

 Ann Marie Simmons

Hi, I'm Ann Marie. I'm originally from Florida, and I plan on majoring in International Business at Appalachian State. Super excited to be a camp counselor at Buckeye Recreational Center! I love outdoor activities and doing crafts in my free time.
