Spring has officially arrived and with it comes a multitude of events and opportunities to get out and about on the mountain. Check out how we started April by reading our Hoppy Easter Party article. Read on to find out about some of our spring volunteer opportunities in the Volunteers Needed section. Then moving right along...in May we will roll into a birthday celebration and the Beech Mountain Metric Ride.  Fast forward two months and we are in June Family-Fun Month with activities and events all across the mountain.  Keep reading the Buzz for more info on all the exciting things coming up on the horizon.

We look forward to seeing you down at Buckeye. For more information or to find out about volunteering for any of the events/activities in this Buzz, please call the Buckeye Recreation Center at (828) 387-3003.

Special Event Recap

"Hoppy" Easter Party

Kelsey and Callie with baby chicks

Families from all around the area filled Buckeye early Saturday morning for our Hoppy Easter Party. Over 215 guests followed Peter Rabbit to the Recreation Center to decorate cookies, play games, create some rabbit whiskers and of course, hunt for eggs! We shared breakfast including bunny salad, an oatmeal buffet, donuts, cheese and crackers and more. Thanks to Kelsey Stines, we had a baby chick petting zoo where kids were able to play with some cute and fluffy friends.  See more photos of the event in our Buzz Photo sidebar.

Register NOW for 2015 Summer Camp

A unique feature for campers attending Buckeye's Adventure Summer Camp is that they can sign up to join us daily. We know there are many wonderful things to do in the mountains as a family and we don't want to lock campers into a full week of camp...so we have designed our registration for campers to come for the day or a few days and join the fun.  Although we will warn parents...once campers visit us for the day...it is hard to keep them away.

The first day of camp is June 22  and camp will run through July 31, Monday through Friday from 9 am - 3 pm. Extended hours are available from 3 - 5 pm.

Each week campers will explore a new set of adventures and fun activities.  They will learn about outdoor survival skills, fishing, sports, hiking, mountain biking, environmental education and so much more!

Campers navigate the wild waters of Watauga river.

Please visit beechrecreation.org and click on the Summer Camp button for more information.  You may also email sroyall@townofbeechmountain.com or call 828-387-3003 to sign up today.

2015 F.I.T Club

Get ready to join Buckeye's 2015 F.I.T. Club.  This 8-week Focused Intense Training program in health and wellness has been designed to help individuals change their lifestyle for the better.

"It is not all about exercising," remarks Kate Prisco.  "It is also about support and having a team of people that care about one another working toward improving their life-styles.  This is what the F.I.T. Club program will offer.
"

The program will begin June 1st and end July 25th. Many activities will be offered over the 8 weeks including canoeing, hiking, and group fitness classes.  Participants will have the chance to participate in an Olympic-style game day, healthy campfire night and a Night on the Town celebration among other activities.  We will also offer a CPR class

This club is for ages 16 and older and open to the public. The fee for the F.I.T. Club is $65 for Buckeye members and $75 for non-members.  This will include a weight room orientation, personal workout schedule, fitness evaluation and one-on-one coaching from the Buckeye staff.  The number of program participants will be limited so that staff will be able to devote time to individualized coaching.

So, if you are interested in the program and looking to make a lifestyle change...sign up early at Buckeye Recreation Center.  Contact Kate Prisco, Fitness Instructor for more details about the program.   Email: kprisco@townofbeechmountain.com

Before beginning any exercise program, you should consult a physician.

Wellness Tip of the Month

Watch the clock.

Pick a time that's convenient to exercise and try to stick to it. If you get used to working out before work or walking during your lunch hour... you're more likely to stick with it.
