Munchkinland Characters Delight Families at Buckeye

Town of Beech Mountain, Parks and Recreation Department
Buckeye Buzz - November 2014
Message from the Staff

As we enter the fall festival season, we are getting ready down at Buckeye for some spooktacular fun.  We've decorated the grounds with pumpkins and straw bales, while inside some friendly ghosts have joined the staff.  Look for the special visitor who's been hanging out in our lobby greeting our guests.  In this Buzz, read about some of our preparations for Old Man Winter, who is waiting just around the corner.  Please note the change in our operating hours starting in November.

For more information or to find out about volunteering for any of the events/activities in the Buzz, please call the Buckeye Recreation Center at (828) 387-3003.

Deck the Halls - Time for the Holiday Market

With the holidays right around the corner, it is time to start making your gift list and checking it twice.  Then mark your calendar to join us for the Holiday Market on Saturday, November 29th from 9 am - 3 pm to find one of a kind presents for your family members and friends.  Little ones can even hand their wish lists to Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

This annual event brings vendors from far and wide down to the Buckeye Recreation Center and includes families activities like cookie decorating, storytelling and more.  The beauty of this event is it combines all the fun of an outdoor festival...indoors!  This is a great way to start the holidays on Beech Mountain.

We are still looking for vendors to sell their holiday items.  Just click on the image below for a vendor application or call (828) 387-3003 for more information.

Special Event Recap

Munchkinland Delights Families From All Over the Country

More than 250 guest and volunteers enjoyed Buckeye's first Munchkinland Adventure on Saturday, October 4th.  Families came from as far away as Pasadena, CA and Chicago, Il to join local residents for a full day of fun.  Volunteers dressed as characters from the Wizard of Oz lead children and adults through a nonstop array of games and activities.  Children had a hard time picking their favorite game and character and parents had an equally hard time trying to get the kids out the door to go home. Special thanks to all the wonderful volunteers and staff that helped create this memorable event for the families that visited Beech Mountain.

Cider Press Highlight of Hayride

Steve Burton and Sean with cider press.

Over 50 individuals braved less than ideal weather conditions to join the Chamber and Buckeye staff at the first Hayride of the season.  Not only were they treated to a foggy-fun ride, they also had a chance to toss some apples and turn the gears on a 150 year old cider press.  The taste of the freshly pressed juice amazed young and old and Johnny Appleseed would have enjoyed the enthusiasm exhibited by all the attendees.  Other activities included pumpkin painting and bowling on the sledding hill.  Thanks to Steve Burton for sharing his "cider-making" skills and answering a lot of questions.  The cider press was so popular, it will make encore appearance at the Halloween Party. Thanks also to the Famous Brick Oven for providing FREE putt putt golf the day of the Hayride.

Out and About
One of Beech Mountain's favorite spots during the Winter is the Sledding Hill.  Now is the time to get the hill ready for another action packed season.  Public Works and the Recreation Department have added some new fencing and guard rails to help keep our visitors safe and to help with traffic flow.  Last season over 10,000 guests visited the hill.

It takes a lot of straw bales to keep the sledding hill safe for all of our guests.
Hiked It - Liked It
With all the rain we have been experiencing on Beech Mountain, the creeks and rivers are roaring.  Here is a photo taken by Sean Royall of the Falls Waterfall in all its glory.
