March Madness Medallion Hunt Begins

Yes, it is that time of the year when crazed, cabin-bound citizens scramble outside to begin the March Madness Medallion Hunt. The event, now in its fifth year, is a scavenger hunt for a metal medallion.  Clues will be posted on the bulletin board at the Buckeye Recreation Center every Monday morning in March at 10 am.  They will also be posted on the Buckeye Recreation Center website, www.beechrecreation.org.

The individual who finds the medallion first will win a $25 dollar gift certificate to the restaurant of their choice on Beech Mountain.  If you find the medallion, bring it to the Buckeye Recreation Center to claim your prize.  If the medallion is found before the last Monday of the month, we will start a second hunt with new clues and prizes.

Good Luck and let the March Madness begin!

CLUE # 1

March is here and the hunt has begun,

Find the medallion hidden beneath the sun.

Stay within the town limit and in a public spot,

Look high and low and you may get hot.

Clues are posted every Monday in the Buckeye Lobby,

This is a serious game for some, not just a hobby.

You will find the medallion in plain sight,

No digging required or extra might.

Park, shelter, creek, trail or playground,

Are perfect places for the medallion to be found.

Good luck, search fast and keep a good pace

Remember my friends this is a race!

Gear Up for New Cycling Event -

Beech Mountain Metric Rolls in toTown

The Beech Mountain Metric is a classic mountain metric century that finishes at the top of Beech Mountain, famed climb of past Tour DuPont rides. With 8,600 ft of climbing... it is a true test for the strongest of riders. The event will be held Saturday, May 17th with a training ride on Saturday, May 3rd.

The Beech Mountain Metric is a BSG (Blood, Sweat and Gears) Events ride, planned and executed by the businesses and citizens of Beech Mountain.  BSG Events is a 501c3 , fund raising non-profit whose net proceeds are donated to local charities and public safety agencies in the High Country.
The Metric is a timed ride. Split times will be captured at the bottom of Beech Mountain with hill climb times posted in addition to overall times.  Riders have the option of capturing times in teams.  A team consists of 5 members with the fastest three times added together to determine the overall team time.
For online registration or more information about this exciting event, please go to www.beechmountainmetric.org.  Volunteers are needed for this new event and training ride.  Please contact the Buckeye Recreation Center at (828) 387-3003 or email buckeyeevents@townofbeechmountain.com if you are interested in volunteering.

Abril Rodriquez Meneses

At Buckeye we are naming March the "Move It Month" and to help everyone get started we are adding an evening Zumba Class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 - 6:30 pm.  For those of you who have not tried Zumba yet, this is the perfect time to come on down to Buckeye and step it up.

We are delighted to welcome Abril to our Fitness Staff.  Abril has been attending Zumba classes at Buckeye for several years and is now one of our instructors.  Originally from Mexico, Abril has traveled extensively through Canada, the United States and several countries in South America doing what she loves to do...dance.

Abril has been dancing Zumba for 10 years.  She came to Banner Elk in 2008 to pursue a B.A. in Performing Arts and Business Administration at Lees-McRae College. She studied wtih Professor Janet Speer and participated in the Dancing with the High Country Stars as her partner.

Don't worry if you have two left feet, there will be no judges...just fun people who want to enjoy some great music and company.  Individuals at any fitness level are welcome!  Classes are free for Buckeye Recreation Center members and $5 for non-members.

Parks and Recreation
Favorite Picnic Places

One of Beech Mountain's newest scenic viewing areas has gone to the dogs!  That's right, head up to the Beech Mountain Bark Park for one of the best views in town.

From the Beech Mountain Parkway, follow the signs to the Bark Park located at the top of the Kite/Special Event Field.  There is ample parking and the picnic shelter is just a stone's throw away from the parking area.  There are two picnic tables under the shelter and plenty of room to spread out.

In the winter, watch the activity down below on the Sledding Hill or check out the skiers as they glide down the slopes of the Resort.  After your picnic if you are interested in a short stroll, take the paved pathway down towards the center of town.

Don't worry if you don't have a dog...humans are allowed!
