Message from the Staff
So far this year we have experienced record low temperatures and some beautiful snow falls.  People have been flocking to the mountain to enjoy our winter wonderland and warm Beech Mountain hospitality.  After a day of outdoor fun, many families have been checking out Buckeye Recreation Center's indoor activities.  Beech Mountain truly has something for everyone to enjoy during any season.  Please stay safe and warm and don't forget you can always come down to play at Buckeye Recreation Center!

Where Are Frosty and Crystal?

Beech Mountain's Annual Snowman Building Contest will be held Saturday, February 8th, from 10 am - noon at the Sledding Hill next to Town Hall, weather permitting.  So far this year, we have had plenty of snow and children have already been creating some very interesting snow-people.  We will have some accessories to cover up any naked snowpeople...but please feel free to bring your own to add some personality to your cool characters!  Prizes will be awarded and this is a great time to take some family photos with some flaky friends!

The event is free and the Chamber of Commerce will be providing some hot chocolate to warm up our builders.  For more information, please call 387-3003.

S'mores Please!

Over 150 guests enjoyed a warm welcome at our January Community Bonfire held at the Famous Brick Oven fire pits.  For many children, this was the first time they experienced roasting marshmallows by the fire.  To heighten their delight, volunteers helped our guests sandwich their toasted sugar nuggets between graham crackers and chocolate, creating s'mores.  The sticky treats were washed down with hot chocolate and cider provided by the Chamber of Commerce.

Bonfire attendees learned more than just the basics of marshmallow manipulation...volunteers answered a wide range of questions and recommended many fun and exciting things to do while staying on Beech Mountain.  Thanks to the Famous Brick Oven and Superlative Realty for their warm hospitality and to our fabulous volunteer team: Bob and Jane Carpenter, Gloria and Bob Alge, Jim Brooks, Kevin Carr, Debbie Canady, Kate and Alexander Gavenus.

Beating the Winter Blahs

Although this can be a beautiful time of year, the first snowfall, hot cocoa, and warm fires; it is not without its challenges. The cold, shorter days, snow, ice and lack of sun can leave you feeling a little blah.  Here are a few tips to beat the winter blahs.
  1. Get outside. Nobody wants to feel cooped up in the house. Enjoy what our surroundings have to offer:  skiing, ice skating, hiking. Grab a friend, head to the rec center and try a new activity like snowshoeing. (I'll even reward you with hot cocoa after).  Activity mixed with socializing is an instant mood booster.
  2. Do something productive. Return emails, clean out your inbox, organize some closets. It is important to feel as if you are accomplishing something.
  3. Let the sunshine in.  Open the blinds on sunny days. The sun will brighten your spirits.
  4. Take care of your health. Eat a balanced diet. Avoid sugar and excess carbs. These foods are not only devoid of the nutrients your body craves, but they zap your energy levels and can affect your mood.
  5. Get enough sleep. Aim for 7-8 hours a night keeping waking time and bedtime consistent.
  6. Be present. Giving your full attention to whatever you are doing and not worrying about the future or past. When we have our focus on our present surrounding instead of running to do lists through our head, we start to notice things we have never seen before. Many worries, resentments and self conscious thoughts we hold begin to fade, thus reducing our stress levels.

 Hope these tips help!

Stay focused and strong,

Tracy

Favorite Picnic Places

When guests come and visit Buckeye Recreation Center, we are always interested in what activities they have been enjoying on Beech Mountain.

Many people tell us they have enjoyed a picnic at one of our scenic spots.  Below are some photos of Perry Park after a light dusting of snow.   The park is located right off Tamarack Road and has ample parking, a picnic shelter, grill and an amazing view of a waterfall.

Wellness Tip of the Month
Instead of trying to drop those last 5 pounds, aim for 4-6. Giving your goal a range makes it seem not only doable but also challenging enough to be worth the effort.
Fitness Couple
of the Month
Sheila and Fred Fussel are this month's Fitness Couple.  They have been members of the recreation center since the summer of 2011.  We greatly appreciate their loyal support and commitment to physical health.  We love seeing you both at Buckeye Recreation Center.
