Certification Testimonial
by Geoffrey Bretches, CHFP, CMPE
Last year the HFMA South Texas Chapter made a generous offer to all chapter members. We were offered a CHFP exam preparation course in the form
of a series of live, interactive webinars, and the hardcopy study guide materials to go with it for no charge if we would purchase and complete the
HFMA online course. Additionally, we were offered to be reimbursed for the CHFP exam should we pass
the course by the end of February this year. The
offer from our chapter was valued at $1,800, quite
an investment in chapter members willing to study
for the exam.

President's Message
Tammie Galindez,
Dir. Client Mgmt.
TransUnion
This year--beginning with the 2013/2014 school year-- will go down for me as the "Year of the Last"! As my only child will be leaving for college this fall, I have had the last first-day of school, the last high school football game he will play in, the last homecoming and this summer will represent the "end of an era" having passed all too fast. And now this...my last message after having had the honor of serving as your chapter president for the last two years. That too has passed so quickly.

Closing the Loop at the Point of Care - A Win - Win for Patients and Physicians
Written by Chris Spring - M*Modal
For today's physicians, a day at work is no walk in the park. In many ways, the digital age has only made the life of the physician more complicated. They struggle with alert fatigue, find the task of maintaining EHRs tedious and time-consuming, struggle with dwindling revenue streams, all while the impending transition to ICD-10 and all that will entail looms overhead. It's little wonder that bedside manner might be the last thing on the physician's mind at this point.

FHA-Insured Loans
Reduce Rates Through Note Modification
Written by Padam Singh, Quintin Harris & Tom Grywalski - Lancaster Pollard
When the nonprofit owners of a senior living facility in Nebraska looked to refinance their current loan insured by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)/Federal Housing Administration (FHA), they considered a little known program that has not been widely used in the past-note modification.
What is it?
One of the key benefits of FHA-insured financing is that it provides long-term debt at a reasonable cost on a nonrecourse basis and with few covenants. With the note modification program, FHA is trying to add to the list of benefits by accelerating the refinancing process. The agency can provide a faster turn-around by focusing on one loan parameter-the interest rate. Like any other government agency financing program, the key for the borrower will be to fit into the programmatic requirements.

Transparency Goes Public

Written by Andrew Cohen & Jason O'Riordan
Castlight Health is a name hospital and health system executives should know. Founded in 2008, Castlight offers price "transparency tools" designed to help employers and individuals control healthcare costs by allowing employees to gauge the relative cost and quality of specific services before selecting a provider. Such tools are not new to health care. They have been offered by other companies and some healthcare payers in various forms for years, but their adoption has increased rapidly as of late.
