Organizational Updates

Graduation 2013

The annual graduation banquet organized by the Northern Virginia Chapter is scheduled for the evening of June 12.  Almost four dozen graduates from plumbing and HVAC programs will be honored at the event.  If you would like to attend and have not yet made a reservation, the deadline has been extended to June 4.  Use this Reservation form to save your place!

Board Actions

The Plumbing and Mechanical Professionals of Virginia Board of Directors met in Virginia Beach on May 17 with full board participation.  Among the items discussed was the creation of social media accounts for the organization to communicate more thoroughly with members.  By July 1, the organization will have a fully operational Facebook page and Linked in group.  If either of these channels appeal to you, please accept our invitation to connect.

The Board also approved changes to the PMPV website that will make it more interactive and user friendly.  The new website will be operational this month...please visit www.PMPV.org after June 15.

Legislative Update

The Virginia CEU Issue

Legislative Chair Laurie Crigler is coordinating a meeting on June 3 in Louisa, Virginia to discuss the proposed elimination of continuing education for the plumbing, HVAC and fuel trades by the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation.  The matter will be discussed in public hearings around the state before a final recommendation later this year.  In making the recommendation, DPOR staff suggested that CEUs make no difference in the delivery or quality service or customer satisfaction and represent an unnecessary expense to the State.  If you would like to express your opinion or attend the June 4 meeting, please contact Laurie Crigler.

Apprentices Compete
At midday, contestants gather for instruction.
Eight highly skilled and competitive apprentices participated in the annual Plumbing Apprentice Competition on May 16 in Virginia Beach.  The field of competitors was challenged to each rough-in a bathroom within seven hours to the satisfaction of judges.

The winner is Jose Noe Hernandez of D.F. Williams Plumbing.  Second place was awarded to William Skelsky of Cameron Plumbing, Inc., and third place went to T.J. O'Bryen of Norfolk Air, Heating and Cooling.  The top two finishers will have an opportunity to attend the PHCC National Convention in October in Las Vegas to compete for national honors.

Thanks go to Ferguson Enterprises for hosting the event and assisting with supplies, Copper Development and Sioux Chief. The competition was facilitated by Jim Steinle, Jason Richard, Mike Hurt, Evan Hibbs and Jim Howe.
