Board Updates

The Plumbing and Mechanical Professionals of Virginia Board of Directors will meet in Virginia Beach on May 17 at the Westin Hotel.  If you have a subject that should be discussed by the Board, please contact President Jim Steinle.

.

Other matters to be discussed include plumbing and HVAC apprentice competitions, communications, membership and continuing education.

Legislative Update

The Virginia CEU Issue

Legislative Chair Laurie Crigler reports that on April 9  the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation DPOR took the first steps that would eliminate continuing education for the plumbing, HVAC and fuel trades. The matter will be discussed in public hearings around the state before a final recommendation later this year.  In making the recommendation, DPOR staff suggested that CEUs make no difference in the delivery or quality service or customer satisfaction and represent an unnecessary expense to the State.  PMPV is researching CEU requirements throughout the country.

Meanwhile in Washington, D.C.
You may still have a chance to attend the 2013 PHCC Legislative Conference to be held later this month.  You can click here to learn more about the event.  The schedule also includes an evening reception on May 22 at the Capitol.  Tickets are $100 each. This includes transportation from the Key Bridge Marriott and heavy hors d'oeuvres. It's a great experience for someone who's never done it. If members and prospective members only have time to participate on Thursday - tickets are $60,which  includes transportation from the Key Bridge Marriott to Charlie Palmer Restaurant, breakfast, appointment scheduling with legislators and the closing reception at the Key Bridge.

Apprenticeship Competitions (Plumbing and HVAC)
If you know of a deserving 3rd or 4th year plumbing apprentice, it's not too late to recommend them as a contestant in the PMPV Plumbing Apprentice Competition.  Only 10 apprentices will compete in the annual event scheduled for May 16 at Virginia Beach.  Apprentices can enter on their own or through recommendation by instructors or employers.  According to participants from earlier competitions, the experience is challenging and entertaining and the benefits are remarkable.

Feel free to print and share the 2013 Plumbing Apprentice Competition brochure.  For more information, contact Jim Steinle or Jason Richard.

Details are still being finalized, but here is a link for the HVAC Apprentice Competition that will be held in conjunction with the CONNECT 2013, October 16-19, 2013, at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.  To be kept informed about details, including identifying competition candidates, contact Susan Milhoan.

Membership organizations are only as valuable as their members believe they are relevant.  A membership investment is a thoughtful decision that involves your perceptions about the organization, what it stands for and what it offers to you and your business.

PMPV intends to work hard to retain the loyalty of its members while growing its presence throughout Virginia.  Please help by taking this short member survey.
