Giving Back Can Be
Very Good for You

What makes volunteering so appealing is that it's a win-win situation. Those being helped benefit as well as those doing the helping. Learn more about the benefits of volunteering.

"Ms. Clara" has a knack for helping residents step outside of their comfort zones. Whether they're sharing stories and laughs or dancing around the community, it's always a good time when Clara visits.

Solving weekly crossword puzzles with residents, Sister Ruth of St. Joseph has cracked the secret to happiness. "It's very satisfying to see and hear how much the residents like our giant crossword program time together, and I am amazed how they come up with the difficult answers," she said.

A member of Bartlett's Tri-Village Garden Club, Jane beautifies the senior community garden and patio by planting flowers-some replanted for her own backyard! Jane also helps residents grow spiritually by giving out communion at the weekly worship service.

Volunteers generously share their time and talents, and in doing so, they help Pathway residents stay active, happy and socially connected-while reaping personal rewards as well!

Back in junior high school, Angela started volunteering, and now at age 22, she is part of the family. "Seeing Angela grow up has been a joy to everyone." said Alexian Village Community Life Manager Andi Rothenberg. "She has had a big impact on many residents' lives."

Wednesday is game day when Joliet Central High School football players visit residents for friendly board games and conversation. No helmets or shoulder pads are needed for this unlikely-yet wonderful-matchup.

As a member of the Elk Grove Baptist Choir,
Jason first visited for a holiday performance, and so enjoyed socializing with residents after the show that he started coming every Tuesday. Today, more than four years later, the residents are the ones singing Jason's praises!

As a Comfort Hospice volunteer, Amanda
brightens residents' days with her warm smile, loving heart and...card games! After hours of playing, Amanda says, "I think I'm a pro now."

"Professor" Jim keeps residents mentally challenged and growing intellectually with the college-level lectures he leads for Lifelong Learning and World Tour programs.

Lynn
has been shuffling and dealing cards for Kings in the Corner and Rummy 500 once a week for the past six years. Lynn says she enjoys spending time with seniors and playing cards, so this is a winning hand any way you cut it.
