Walk to End Alzheimer's

Understanding Alzheimer's
Visit our blog to learn more about the seven stages of Alzheimer's disease as outlined by the Alzheimer's Association.

Eat Right to
Stay Bright
Foods that are rich in antioxidants--such as berries, dark leafy greens, grapes, carrots, beets and tomatoes--keep your brain in peak working order by preventing cholesterol from lining arteries and slowing blood flow to the brain.

Pathway's Chef Betsy Robinson cooks up heart and brain healthy recipes daily. One of Chef Betsy's favorite recipes is a twist on Tuna Waldorf Salad. Click here for recipe.

Pathway seniors offer these fun
and simple ways to keep your
brain in the game!

Red Swoosh
  Hang with Kids
Spending time with children includes positive interactions, ongoing learning and mental stimulation--all of which reduce the risk for dementia.
So be smart and get silly with the grandkids like Victory Centre of Vernon Hills residents did on Grandparents' Day.
Be Social
Social engagement and mental engagement often go hand-in-hand. So have fun with friends!
Pathway residents connected with fellow
baseball fans while watching the Cubs play during a recent trip to a night game at Wrigley Field.
A win-win for residents and the Cubs!
 Enjoy the Arts
Those who continue to find meaning, joy and inspiration in the world around them tend to have sharper minds. Experience the arts and see what speaks to you.
An outing to Chicago's Art Institute (voted the
world's best by Trip Advisor!) had
many Pathway seniors in awe!
Try Something New
New experiences help stimulate and strengthen the mind like going out of your "gourd" for gourds. Alexian Village residents grow gourds from seed, hand-pollinate the plants, and train the vines to form gourd huts. At harvest time, they celebrate by hosting Gourdfest!
See photos.
Gourdfest won the 2012 Industry Innovator Award
for Activity-Based Programming by the
International Council on Active Aging.
Play with a Pooch
Teddy, a rescued lab mix, is the newest neighbor at Victory Centre of Vernon Hills, who is helping residents experience these benefits firsthand.
Four-legged friends can improve your mood and yourhealth--which both lead to a stronger mind. Petting, playing with and walking a dog can increase blood-flow and oxygenate the brain.
Teddy is estimated to be close to 11 years old, but has boundless energy and enthusiasm. Pathway's canine companion program, See Spot Retire, offers older dogs new lives and affords residents meaningful relationships, unconditional affection and motivation to exercise.
