Announcing Big Initiatives! We have great news to share with all our loyal customers and supporters! On August 1st, Build It Green! NYC's assets will be transferred to Big Initiatives Incorporated, a not for profit organization dedicated to the same core environmental mission of Build It Green!NYC. Big Initiatives' mission is to keep materials out of the landfill through reuse, recycling, and composting; salvage construction materials; and create green living wage jobs. Big Initiatives Incorporated was founded by dedicated community activists who wanted to build on the work of Build It Green. Look out for more exciting changes as we make the transition. If you do not want your email address transferred from Community Environmental Center and its division Build It Green!NYC to Big Initiatives Incorporated, please opt out at the bottom of this email using the SafeUnsubscribe link or email us at [email protected]. Great Salvage from St. Agnes Class was in session for the our deconstruction crew this month as they took on a salvage project at the site of the St. Agnes School for Boys on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Led by Kit Schultz, the team turned in A+ quality work, bringing home six truckloads of reusable material! Some of the highlights among the wealth of educational treasures the team uncovered include original doors with frames, single pedestal sinks, lockers, desks, and a science lab full of beakers and specimens.
The warehouse team has also been working hard on their assignment of getting these specialty items ready for reuse. The fruits of their labor have already provided inspiration to our film and theater clients looking for unique materials and authentic props to create accurate, period-appropriate settings. Many items have already found a new home, but much more will be made available as we complete this extensive, exciting project. Check our website regularly for updated inventory, or visit the warehouse yourself to peruse the shelves.
The schoolhouse, located on West End Avenue at 87th Street, opened its doors in 1908 as St. Agatha's School for Girls, and was also the home of Cathedral College for many years. From 1992 until its closing in 2013, the building housed St. Agnes Boys' High School. The building was purchased last year by CL Investment Group with the architecture and development firm Tamarkin Co., who will be converting the school into condominiums. The developers intend to stay true to the original architecture, retaining the high, majestic ceilings and recreating much of the original millwork. BIG!NYC wishes to thank Tamarkin Co. and CL Investment Group for the opportunity to preserve the interior furnishings of this beautiful New York landmark! |
