Build It Green! NYC gives back to Lefferts Community Food Cooperative

In January 2015, BIG!NYC donated three refrigerators and heavily discounted like-new metal shelving units for the Lefferts Community Food Cooperative (LCFC). Opening in November 2014, LCFC is a new member-run and cooperatively-run grocery store located at 324 Empire Boulevard in Prospect Lefferts Gardens. Their mission is to provide high quality foods at the lowest price possible to the surrounding community.

LCFC now has almost 200 working members and plans to grow significantly in 2015. Since it is all member-financed and does not generate a profit on food sales, one of the challenges was getting store fixtures for inventory and storage that would not drain the budget. When BIG!NYC came through with several items that would work well in the store, the coop members rallied! On a freezing and rainy Saturday, members arrived at BIG!NYC and loaded up the disassembled pieces of over 17 metal shelving units, an upright freezer, a beverage cooler, and a residential subzero. Not only did the materials from Build It Green! NYC save the coop a lot of money, but they also instantly maximized space, remaking the storefront into a place to efficiently and safely store food.
