Deconstruction Spotlight: Lisburne Grange Library
BIG!NYC had the privilege of salvaging an exquisite library at the Lisburne Grange estate. The mansion was built in Garrison, NY in the 1860s by Samuel Sloan, a wealthy railroad magnate and one time New York State Senator (see "Salvaging the Sloan House").
This prewar library is a magnificent mixture of salvaged European components married to rich-grained oak paneling. All the decorative aspects - arches, alcoves and pilasters - are hand-carved antiques. A highlight of the classic yet quirky Greek Revival design is the mantel panel. It contains a beautifully rendered perspective carving of a tower viewed through a stoa. This is flanked on either side by lively carvings of flaming torches, echoing the fire that would warm the actual hearth below. These are but a few of the splendid details contained in this panel, not to mention the library in its entirety. Also included in this set is a beautiful marble mantel, original oak doors and windows. Available at BIG!NYC Queens for $45,000 (ALU: 27933).
Another intricate yet folksy mantel, which includes an original oil painting, has also been reclaimed for a second time. This beautiful mantel bears a dedication in French dating the mantel to 1741, beneath it reads 'Placed in this room 1932 Lisburne Grange Garrison'. After 273 years, this mantel awaits its third dedication. This mantel is also available at our Queens location.
The Lisburne Grange library project allowed BIG!NYC's deconstruction team an incredible opportunity to work with museum-quality materials. Our team's hard work and dedication meant not only diverting waste from landfills, but also preserving historically significant items that may have tragically been lost forever.
