BIG!NYC Deconstruction Team Salvages a Marvelous 1890's CT Mansion
As part of our on-going effort to divert usable materials from going to landfills, our Deconstruction Team has been keeping busy. From Connecticut to the Upper East Side, we have been collecting appliances, dismantling lighting fixtures, and reclaiming lumber.
At an 1890's Connecticut mansion, nestled along the gorgeous Long Island Sound, reclamation work yielded vintage brass lighting fixtures, lovely parquet flooring, wood fireplace mantels, and three types of tiles: American Encaustic, Louviere, and Trent. These salvaged materials can be found on the Gowanus reuse center's floor, ready to be rehoused!

" Greenmarket Dirt" is a 10lbs. bag of organic compost that comes from a farm in upstate NY. It is made from horse manure, cow manure and food scraps. Each 10lbs. bag is $10.95 and available in both Astoria and Gowanus. Here are some important things to know about compost: - High quality, nutrient rich compost from an organic farm in upstate New York Proceeds from compost sales go towards local composting efforts (BIG!Compost and GrowNYC)
-
For potting mix add 1 part compost + 2 parts ground soil = healthy environment for plants! - For gardens or potted plants, spread an inch of compost over the plant's roots (fun fact: this is called "Topdressing"!).
- Topdress your potted plants 3x a year, spring, mid-summer and fall.
