Helping Those Hard Hit by Hurricane Sandy
While rebuilding and repairing our Gowanus reuse center, Build It Green!NYC devised a plan for how we could assist our neighbors' recovery. Since then, we've donated materials to nonprofit organizations who have then distributed these items to residents in need. This effort has been supported by the North Star Fund's Grassroots Hurricane Relief Fund. (Please note: BIG!NYC is not giving away free materials at our NYC reuse centers.)
In January and February, BIG!NYC's trucks made several trips from our reuse centers in NYC and delivered goods worth over $6,000 to The Action Center (TAC), in the Far Rockaways. In addition to the materials supplied by BIG!NYC, TAC has been providing food, water, blankets, clothes, toiletries, cleaning products, to residents in the Rockaways. TAC welcomes the BIG!NYC trucks and distributes the donated furniture to Rockaways' resident via a lottery system. The next scheduled delivery is for this weekend. And in partnership with Materials for the Arts, BIG!NYC donated over $8,600 worth of office furniture to 18 nonprofits displaced by the superstorm. Want to help? - Make a large donation: TAC tells us that furniture, in good condition, and appliances are in high demand, along with building materials. BIG!NYC will pick up or coordinate materials that fill up a box truck. Contact donate@bignyc.org.
- Make a small donation: There's a great Facebook Group where you can offer free furniture and household goods to Hurricane Sandy victims in NJ, NY, PA and surrounding affected areas.
Looking for help? - Check out Facebook: As we mentioned above, there's a helpful Facebook Group where you can see what free items New Yorkers are offering Hurricane Sandy victims.
- Contact your local relief center: TAC distributes donated items based on a lottery system. Contact your local relief center to learn more.
Please note: Donations are not being distributed from BIG!NYC reuse centers. Some donations may be sold by BIG!NYC to help support our organizations operations and fund this relief effort.
