Spreading the Reuse-Love to Our Cities Street Cats

After Superstorm Sandy hit NYC last fall, many were left without a place to stay. When the Build It Green!NYC Gowanus reuse center re-opened, Kathryn Walton took it upon herself to pick up some materials to create a home for some of those little furry ones left without shelter: stray cats. Kathryn is the founder of The American Street Cat (TASC), a non profit organization designed to help neuter, shelter, and find homes for stray cats across New York City.

In addition to starting an organization focused on addressing the stray cat population in the city, Kathryn is also a designer. She created cat shelters from recycled materials, some of which were from Build It Green!NYC. The shelters she created used old cat food cans as the exterior walls. These cans were filled with recycled denim as insulation, which is more effective than the 1-1/2" rigid pink building insulation. Kathryn also custom cut recycled materials to form an insulated ceiling and floor. With a couple of screws, there was suddenly a highly sustainable home for some of the cats with TASC. These new homes were featured in a shelter design exhibit and are now in a cat colony on the grounds of a Brooklyn monastery.
