"Celebrating Students and Teachers" Show
In June, Sequoia Gallery + Studios celebrates the successful art education we provide to area residents throughout the year with a show of art work created by the students who take our classes and by the instructors who teach them. Join us for the opening reception of this first-time ever show on Tuesday, June 4th from 6 to 8pm.
Sequoia Gallery + Studios is proud of the variety of classes we offer to the community. Our art instructors, many of whom are award winning artists, are selected for their engaging teaching styles and art expertise, We offer classes in a variety of mediums including mixed media, photography, oils, watercolor, mosaic, glass, illustration, life drawing, and acrylic painting. Our teaching roster has included local and national favorites such as Brenda Boylan, Lynn Adamo, Eric Jacobsen, Craig Srebnik, Steve Kleier, Linda Rothchild Ollis, William Park, and James Smith.
Our popular "Dine with the Artist" evenings give the public an opportunity to informally mix and mingle with our instructors at local Hillsboro restaurants. Each dinner is followed by a lecture and demonstration back in our classroom. Our combined dinner/demo evening events have proved to be a wonderful, affordable, way of sampling our instructors, their classes, and their teaching styles prior to committing to a full-length class.
Classes are forming for the summer and fall of 2013. Summer classes will include an oil painting workshop taught by Sequoia member Royce Kugler, a mosaic class taught by Sequoia board member,Lynn Adamo, and a weekend, off-site, Plein Air Painting workshop with Eric Jacobson. Craig Srebnik is planning an Life Painting in Oil workshop in the fall following the Hillsboro Plein Air event. We frequently add new classes so check our website often or stop by the gallery for a class schedule.

What Our Students Say
Many of our students are "repeat customers" who enjoy the convenience and value of Sequoia art classes and the expertise of our instructors.
Katherine Ford has taken several painting classes at Sequoia with Steve Kleier, Craig Srebnik, and Erik Jacobsen and frequently attends our life drawing classes and "Dine with the Artist/Art Demonstration" evenings. Katherine has this to say about taking classes at Sequoia:
"I greatly enjoy the workshop program at Sequoia, organized by Sequoia Educational Coordinator and volunteer, Claudia Stockton. I particularly like being exposed to Sequoia workshop teachers who have taught locally, regionally, and even internationally. I also enjoy attending the evening demonstrations given by the artists prior to the date of the workshop. The "Dine with an Artist" dinners at Hillsboro restaurants, before the art demos, give students and artists a chance to meet the instructor informally before taking the instructor's workshop. These demos encourage local artists to learn about other media. The workshops are geared towards all levels of ability and are limited to twelve students, which allows time for individual instruction. Sequoia's classroom is well equipped with props, lighting, and individual set up space." | Mosaic Instructor Lynn Adamo (right) with Class Participants, Sandy Arbogast (left) and Janie Van Domelen . | Local artist Sandy Arbogast has been creating mosaic art for twenty years, but enjoys taking classes at Sequoia to learn new techniques and meet new people. " Lynn Adamo's sculptural mosaic substrate class was especially enjoyable," says Sandy,"Lynn gave students a start on the basics and then let everyone take off in their own direction while she made the rounds to offer suggestions and answer questions. Lynn is an expert at making a class both structured and informal!"
Joanne Kollman has been taking classes with Erik Jacobsen since 2005 and recently participated in his Plein Air Oil Painting Class which took place offsite at a local private garden and alpaca farm. She says, "We have an amazing pool of talent in our region and Sequoia does an amazing job with their roster of art instructors." We wholeheartedly agree!

Meet Claudia Stockton
Sequoia board member and Educational Chair, Claudia
|
Claudia Stockton
|
Stockton, generously volunteers her time to Sequoia in order to bring to the community a year round schedule of classes. As a former Hillsboro teacher, Claudia is adept at finding high caliber art instructors who have a firm command of their subject matter and who are able to gear their classes to the needs of their students. Claudia is involved in every phase of our educational programming, from brainstorming ideas for new classes, to selecting and scheduling the classes and instructors. She also attends most of the classes, arriving early to help the instructor set up and greeting students as they arrive. Sequoia Gallery + Studios members are grateful to Claudia for building our educational program to the point that many of our students look forward to our classes and have become repeat customers.
