CUISD Presents: Our Common Home
Our Common Home was conceived as a response to the remarkable document issued by Pope Francis in 2015. This inspired work challenges the communities of science, ethics, justice, economics and religion to all imagine an integral ecology based upon compassion and environmental knowledge. This is big. His first encyclical letter has energized many in the environmental communities in ways that could have lasting significant impacts. Our Common Home brings together a range of voices that will explore and reflect on the significance of these writings. This celebratory evening is anchored by many seminal voices: Mary Evelyn Tucker, Senior Lecturer and Research Scholar at Yale's School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and Divinity school, Elaine Pagels, Professor of Religion at Princeton University, David Orr, Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics at Oberlin College, and Arthur Lerner-Lam, Professor and Deputy Director of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University. The voices of distinguished poets, artists, musicians and writers, including Jorie Graham, Andrew Sullivan, Scott Chaskey, Marie Ponsot, Timothy Donnelly and Joy Harjo, highlight and sustain the program.

Architecture Summer Program Now Accepting Applications!
The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union is offering two 4-week intensive courses at the college and high school level during the Summer 2016 session. The workshop programs introduce students to foundational concepts and practices within the study of architecture, site visits, lectures, and culminate in the production of a portfolio.
The summer session will run July 5 - July 29, 2016. Admission is on a competitive rolling basis. More information available here |

GRANT | NYSCA Architecture and Design Program via Storefront for Art and Architecture Do you have an idea for a project that promotes alternative ideas in art and architecture? This year, Storefront will sponsor twenty independent architecture and design projects. The Architecture + Design Program of the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) awards project grants for individuals or teams through its Independent Projects category. NYSCA is looking for projects that are innovative in nature and emphasize the artistry of design excellence. Storefront will sponsor up to 20 projects for this year's NYSCA grants. Priority will be given to applications that align with Storefront's organizational mission to advance innovative and critical positions that go beyond disciplinary and ideological boundaries. Complete the initial application formand send to Alexandra Axiotis, Development and Outreach Associate at Storefront, by emailing [email protected] with the subject line "NYSCA Independent Project Application Request" no later than midnight on March 17, 2016. If you are selected as one of the 20 projects sponsored by Storefront, you will be asked to submit a full project proposal no later than midnight on March 24, 2016. DESIGN CHALLENGE | Branch Technology Freeform Home Design Challenge. The competition is an investigation of how 3D printing technologies can improve our built environment and lives today. We are asking participants to design a single-family home that rethinks traditional aesthetics, ergonomics, construction, building systems, and structure from the bottom up. We challenge you to strip away preconceived notions of traditional design and construction and to think freely. At Branch Technology, we have developed a novel method for 3D printing architectural components. This method combines large-scale robotics, sophisticated algorithms and carbon composite materials to print open-cell structures. This patented technology is called Cellular Fabrication™. C-Fab™ is unique in that it is flexible in functionality, formally dynamic, fully customizable, and environmentally efficient compared to other methods of construction. Exploring the concept of lightness and "a lighter way of living," participants have the opportunity to enter the Rado Star Prize competition and finalists will have the opportunity to display their concepts during the design week at WantedDesign in Brooklyn during NYCxDESIGN and win $5000 and a Rado Watch. Contestants will be tasked to create a design project in the field of product, graphic, industrial or lighting design through innovative ideas and the use of new materials in the area of home decoration items, tableware objects and giftable ideas for the living space, all while keeping in mind the theme of "lightness." CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS | PLOT is an award-winning annual journal produced by the Master of Landscape Architecture students of the City College of New York's Spitzer School of Architecture. The theme of PLOT Volume 5 is FILTER. The word filter operates as both noun and verb, evoking multiple interpretations: to filter is to edit, to sift, to screen. It suggests a paring down, a refinement, a draft distilled to its most elegant iteration. FILTER submissions are open to all: students, professors, practitioners, collaborators, and friends. Submissions may be drawings, siftings, screens, texts, interviews, etc. Please feel free to speak with any member of the PLOT Editorial Team (MLA second-year students) to discuss your ideas and thoughts, and send your material as an MS Word document or high resolution image via email to [email protected]. The journal is not limited to a specific aspect of engineering and architecture but is instead devoted to a wide range of subfields in the engineering sciences and architecture. Articles of interdisciplinary nature are particularly welcome. There will be a commitment to expediting the time taken for the publication of the papers. The journal also publishes innovative contributions on every aspect of architectural endeavor. AWARD | 2016 Buckminster Fuller Institute (BFI) The Fuller Challenge is accepting student entries for the first time. Known as socially responsible design' highest award, the Fuller Challenge invites designers, architects, planners, entrepreneurs, scientists, artists, activists, and students worldwide to submit original solutions to some of humanity's most pressing problems. A $100,000 prize is awarded to support the development and implementation of the winning project. In addition to the grand prize, BFI will provide further resources for finalists, semi-finalists and select entrants through its Catalyst Program. In 2016, BFI will, for the first time, recognize outstanding student entries to the Challenge through a separate review, selection, and award process. With a taste for the fantastical, thresholds 45 invites submission of scholarly articles, creative contributions from the fields of architecture, art, and literature, and narrative content which clarifies or complicates our understanding of myth + architecture. Essay submissions should be in English, approx. 3,000 words, and formatted in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style.
