 Tomorrow! In Conversation: Justice Stephen Breyer and Henry N. Cobb


 The Architectural League and The Cooper Union are honored to host a conversation between the United States Supreme  Court Justice Stephen Breyer and architect Henry N. Cobb. Justice Breyer and Mr. Cobb will discuss their collaboration as  client and architect in the development of the federal courthouse in Boston, and their reflections on the civic importance and  symbolic power of architecture for the judiciary.

 This event is free and open to all. Reservations required. Tickets are will call. Check-in begins at 8:15 a.m.; doors open at  8:30 a.m.

"As discussed in the last post (Part 3) humanity has taken the first step towards sustainability in a widespread, though far from universal, effort to do the easy part: harvest the low hanging fruit. But creating a true sustainable economy will require three more distinct steps, all of which will be much harder than what has come so far, yet all equally necessary."

SCHOLARSHIP | The Rotch Travelling Scholarship is an annual two-stage design competition that results in one person, deemed the Rotch Scholar, traveling the world for at least six months studying architecture - and we pick up the tab. In the first stage of the selection process, a weekend-long preliminary design competition is held. Finalists from this competition go on to compete in the second stage, a 10-day competition culminating in a design presentation to a distinguished jury in Boston. CALL FOR ENTRIED | AIANY New Practices New York 2016 serves as the preeminent platform in New York City to recognize and promote new and innovative architecture and design firms. The juried portfolio competition honors firms that have utilized unique and innovative strategies, both for the projects they undertake and for the practices they have established. Winners receive participation in an exhibition / installation at the Center for Architecture, a stipend towards the exhibition, a free one year membership in the AIA New York Chapter and access to the New Practice Committee, participation in a symposium to discuss their practice at the Center for Architecture, an individual lecture at the Cosentino/Dekton showroom, media exposure through the AIANY and The Architect's Newspaper, a trip to Spain with competition underwriter Cosentino for an architectural tour of its global headquarters and state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities. SCHOLARSHIP | Hanbury Evans Summer Scholar program provides a unique opportunity for visiting students and firm professionals to work side by side and learn from each other. Project work, design competitions, field trips, lectures
and critiques are included in the summer experience. This full-time position provides competitive compensation and includes housing. CURATORIAL RESIDENCY | The Canadian Centre for Architecture is accepting applications for The Emerging Curator Program. This program offers the opportunity to propose and curate a project at the CCA related to contemporary debates in architecture, urban issues, landscape design and cultural and social dynamics. The project is to be developed during a residency of three months at the CCA. Architects, journalists, designers, critics, historians, photographers, artists and other scholars and professionals born on or after 1 January 1981 are eligible for this program, regardless of citizenship and place of residence. RESIDENCY | University of Michigan STAMPS Roman J. Witt residency program. The mission of the Roman J. Witt Residency Program is to support the production of new work with assistance from the Stamps School of Art & Design community. The program awards one residency per academic year for a visiting artist/designer to work at the school to develop a new work in collaboration with students and faculty. To witness and partake in the creation of a defined work from idea to realization is the centerpiece of the residency. This visibility of the artist's process is intended as an exemplary teaching tool for the school as a whole. The residency is expected to culminate in the realization of the proposed work, as well as a presentation that summarizes the process and work accomplished. DESIGN COMPETITION | The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia and the FabLab Barcelona are pleased to announce the 6th Advanced Architecture Contest, on the theme of PRODUCTIVE CITY. The aim of the competition is to promote discussion and research through which to generate insights and visions, ideas and proposals that help us envisage what the city and the habitat of the 21st century will be like. The competition is open to architects, engineers, planners and designers who want to contribute to progress in making the world more habitable by developing a proposal capable of responding to emerging challenges in areas such as ecology, information technology, architecture, and productive cities. CALL FOR IDEAS | Storefront for Art and Architecture, 
Taking Buildings Down asks proposals for the production of voids; the demolition of buildings, structures, and infrastructures; or the subtraction of objects and/or matter as a creative act. Removal is all that is allowed. Three monetary prizes will be awarded to the winners of Taking Buildings Down. FELLOWSHIP | New York Foundation for the Arts,
Artists' Fellowships, awarded in fifteen different disciplines over a three-year period are $7,000 cash awards made to individual originating artists living and working in the state of New York for unrestricted use. CALL FOR IDEAS | Buckminster Fuller Institute. Each year, BFI invites scientists, students, designers, architects, activists, entrepreneurs, artists and planners from all over the world to submit solutions for addressing humanity's most pressing problems. Named "Socially-Responsible Design's Highest Award", the Fuller Challenge attracts bold, visionary initiatives focused on critically important, well-defined social and environmental needs. The Fellowship Program is meant to enhance rigorous discourse in the Fuller Challenge review process by bringing additional voices and perspectives into the discussion. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS | The AIA award-winning UDream program (Urban Design Regional Employment Action for Minorities) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) was created in 2006 to address the underrepresentation of minorities in the professions of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design. The program, based in Pittsburgh, runs from June 2016 to October 2016 and includes: 1) an intense academic urban design component of five weeks on the CMU campus, including a community based studio project; 2) one week of mentoring local high school students in a community urban design project; and 3) a twelve week internship with a Pittsburgh private urban design or architecture firm or a public planning agency. Successful applicants receive a full scholarship to cover the cost of tuition, housing for four months, and transportation to and from Pittsburgh, plus a monthly living stipend of $1,000 for the four months. AWARD | Charter of New Urbanism convenes a Charter Awards jury of distinguished designers, architects, planners and scholars who review entries and select winners. SCHOLARSHIP | Bernhardt Design and Emerald Expositions team up annually to present ICFF Studio each May. This scholarship program is a juried competition created as a platform for young designers to showcase their existing prototypes to manufacturers, retailers, and the media. To be eligible to enter the competition, the designer must have a working prototype that is not currently in commercial production. Each year up to 12 designers are selected from the pool of applicants who successfully meet these guidelines and will be awarded a $1,000 AMEX card. DESIGN CHALLENGE | Metals in Construction magazine invites architects and engineers to redesign the facade of 200 Park Avenue (formerly the Pan Am Building), one of New York City's most recognized landmarks, with the goal of achieving greater energy performance. CALL FOR WORK | Metals in Construction Competition. Sponsored by The Steel Institute of New York. 
Metals in Construction magazine 2016 Design Challenge, an international ideas competition to re-imagine the facade of 200 Park Avenue with the goal of achieving greater energy efficiency. The competition's grand prize is $15,000 and the winner and runners-up will be announced at a conference and exhibition in NYC on Friday, February 26. Winners will also be published in Metals in Construction and other partner publications.

DESIGN COMPETITION | Illuminating Engineering Society. The IESNYC is celebrating the 16th year of the Student Lighting Competition on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at the 404 Event Space located at 404 10th Avenue, near Penn Station. THE CHALLENGE: This year's theme challenges students to construct a 3D study that explores the interaction between LIGHT AND TIME. Whether slow and subtle, quick and intermittent, or entirely random, variations in quality of light change our perception of the world around us. PRIZES 1st place - $2,000 2nd place - $1,000 3rd place - $500  Additional prizes will be awarded to other notable projects. DESIGN COMPETITION | Interiors & Sources magazine has partnered with architecture and design firms //3877 and Arcsine for its annual I Like Design Student Competition. We're hoping to spread the word about this great opportunity among faculty and students with your assistance. The competition is open to any full-time student enrolled in an undergraduate/graduate program with a strong interest in architecture and design. Two winners will receive a paid, full-time 2016 summer internship and paid housing costs with either //3877 in Washington, D.C. or with Arcsine in Oakland, California. The winners will also receive editorial coverage in Interiors & Sources magazine, and be flown out to NeoCon 2016 in June to be recognized for their achievement Deadline: Friday, February 26, 2016.
