Drawing Ambience

Drawing Ambience - Exhibition Continues through November 25th

Drawing Ambience highlights the collection of drawings assembled by the late Alvin Boyarsky during his pivotal tenure as      chairman of the Architectural Association (AA) in London. Boyarsky argued that architecture was not only a profession but    also an artistic venture-a practice that comprises drawing and publication as much as it engages design and construction.  During his time leading the school, he orchestrated an ambitious exhibition and publication program, a sister to the  exhibition and publication program simultaneously being developed at The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture by late  Dean John Hejduk, that situated drawing as not only a representational tool, but as a form of architecture in its own right.  Drawing Ambience explores Boyarsky's role as a collector of drawings and also, metaphorically speaking, of the ideas and  people that have come to define a key moment in architectural history.

Rahul Mehortra

 Lecture: Rahul Mehortra

Friday, November 20th, 2015. 7:00 in Cooper Union's Great Hall

Each year the Architectural League's Current Work series features the work of significant international figures who    powerfully influence contemporary architectural practice and shape the future of the built environment. Rahul Mehrotra  of RMA Architects will present his research projects and firm's work in a public lecture to be followed by a conversation with  Michael Kimmelman.

Mehrotra is an architect, urban planner, and academic. His firm, founded in 1990 and reformed as RMA Architects in 2010,  has offices in Boston and Mumbai working across a wide spectrum of scales and project types, from single-family residences  to large-scale buildings, to the conservation of historic structures and urban designs. Its clients include governmental and  non-governmental agencies, corporate and private clients, and institutions. The firm also takes on architectural and urban  projects as an advocacy group in the city of Mumbai. Paralleling this work is the firm's not-for-profit division, RMA Research,  which undertakes research projects related to architecture and urbanism in India.

Reading Structures

Reading Structuresa lecture by Guy Nordenson, Structural Engineer, New York, Professor, Princeton University

The lecture will explore a number of cultural projects including the National Museum of African American History and the Santa Fe Opera House to discuss the opportunities for creative structural design in steel. Both projects and others presented use the steel structure both for expressive purposes but also for the increased efficiency and ductility that it affords.

The expressive potential of steel structures is clear in the work of Mies van der Rohe where the steel structure expresses not only the means of spanning but the delicate proportions possible by virtue of its high
strength and stiffness. The development of high rise construction in the 1960s to 1980s further exhibit the delicacy and explicit expression of steel with buildings such as the Hancock Tower in Chicago and the World
Trade Center towers in New York. The expressive use is at times direct and others more subtle. The lecture will present some of these and other examples leading up to examples for the work on the speaker.

Co-sponsored by:

The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union
The Albert Nerken School of Engineering of The Cooper Union
with support from The Steel Institute of New York

The Steel Institute of New York is proud to participate in sponsoring this lecture in the belief that hearing distinguished professionals first-hand helps shape the lives of students and motivates them to learn.

Free and open to the public.

Located in The Frederick P. Rose Auditorium, at 41 Cooper Square (on Third Avenue between 6th and 7th Streets)
