TACTILE CITY FEATURED ON NY1
Wayfinding Strategies for Visually Impaired Pedestrians

Construction zones are potentially hazardous for everyone, and they pose a unique challenge to the visually impaired pedestrian. These pedestrians often rely more heavily on memory and other senses to find their way in a busy environment; thus, construction work can render once-familiar routes unnavigable.

A group of Cooper Union students from Architecture and Engineering and recent Art alumni with project instructor Teddy Kofman addressed these issues in the design proposal Tactile City. The project was presented as part of NYCxDESIGN, the New Museum's IDEAS CITY Festival with the New York City Department of Design and Construction and the Mayor's Office of People with Disabilities, and now recently was featured on NY1's monthly science program "It Ain't Rocket Science."
