Traveling in Kyrgyzstan, photographer Margaret Morton became captivated by the otherworldly grandeur of these cemeteries. Cities of the Dead: The Ancestral Cemeteries of Kyrgyzstan exhibits the photographs she took on several visits to the area and is an important contribution to the architectural and cultural record of this region.
Architecturally unique, Kyrgyzstan's dramatically sited cemeteries reveal the complex nature of the Kyrgyz people's religious and cultural identities. Elaborate Kyrgyz tombs combine earlier nomadic customs with Muslim architectural forms. After the territory was formally incorporated into the Russian Empire in 1876, enamel portraits for the deceased were attached to the Muslim monuments. Yet everything within the walls is overgrown with weeds, for it is not Kyrgyz tradition for the living to frequent the graves of the dead.

After a long period of turmoil, Afghanistan is beginning its second decade of democratic governance.
While the rehabilitation process in Afghanistan typically focuses on infrastructure, rebuilding can also advance the goal of national unity by promoting positive public discourse and cross-cultural understanding. As a result, ethnic diversity can be seen as a collective benefit, rather than a source of fragmentation and conflict.
To this end, UNESCO and the Ministry of Information and Culture of Afghanistan, with the generous financial support of the Republic of Korea, are implementing a project to build the Bamiyan Cultural Centre. The Centre will be located near the boundary of the World Heritage property, the Cultural Landscape and Archaeological Remains of the Bamiyan Valley. The purpose of the project is to promote heritage safe-guarding and cross-cultural awareness, and thereby contribute to the broader aims of reconciliation, peace-building and economic development in the country.
The competition is an open call for proposals based on an anonymous design submission. Architects, engineers, designers and students can develop and submit a proposal for the Cultural Centre in Bamiyan, as individuals, companies or joint ventures. One team member must be a licensed / registered architect. Participation in the competition is free and is open to all without restriction of country of origin.
Coordinated by Koukaba Mojadidi (AR '01) as the Architect for UNESCO Kabul, Culture Unit.
The Jury, comprised of National and International experts, will shortlist the entries and select the winning project design. The jurors included Zahra Breshna, Ajmal Maiwandi, Young Joon Kim, Robert Knox, and Elizabeth O'Donnell.

Fairy Tales II

After the record breaking success of Fairy Tales 2014, with entries from over 50 different countries, registration is now open for the second edition of the competition. Fairy Tales is a single phase competition. Participation is open to architects, designers, writers, engineers, illustrators, students and creatives worldwide. Individual or group entries are permitted. Multiple entries per individual or team are permitted, but each submission must be registered and paid for separately. The indication of a group leader is mandatory. Proposals do not need to be generated exclusively for this competition, but they must address the intent of the competition and should not have been published elsewhere before. The official language of the competition is English. All proposals must be submitted in English. Jurors included Anish Kapoor, Paola Antonelli, Karim Rashid, among other leading artists, architects and designers. Discounted Student Registration ($30). Students will be required to enter their University or College, and their .edu email address.
