THE FIVE THOUSAND POUND LIFE
Land
Sept 26 at 2pm
The Great Hall
7 E. 7th Street
NYC
The Five Thousand Pound Life: Land addresses the need to consider settlement patterns and competing land uses in new ways given the reality of climate change. The value assigned to various forms of land use, and various attitudes towards land as a resource, must be understood in terms of ecological services and impacts, rather than narrowly-defined economic imperatives. In sessions on "Nature and the City," "Spatial Logistics," and "Density," speakers will consider American approaches to development, attitudes toward nature, and whether the current dominant narrative of the environmental superiority of concentrated high density development might be challenged by a counter-narrative of lower density land-use that takes advantage of distributed energy production and localized treatment of waste. Ultimately, The Five Thousand Pound Life: Land will ask what the desirable and politically achievable mix of these narratives could be.

Speakers include: Kevin Bone, Vishaan Chakrabarti, Coral Davenport, Rosalie Genevro, Rob Holmes, Alex Klatskin, Jesse LeCavalier, Albert Pope, Eric Sanderson, Ted Steinberg, Emily Talen, and Charles Waldheim

LESSONS FROM LESSONS FROM MODERNISM
A lecture by Daniel Barber
Oct 2 at 6:30pm
Rose Aud
41 Cooper Sq
NYC
Architects have long had an interest in the relationship of their design interventions to surrounding environmental conditions. As the exhibition Lessons from Modernism demonstrates, with the introduction of modern architectural techniques this relationship was reconfigured. In this lecture, Daniel Barber will argue that the ways in which architects have imagined and represented new conditions for environmental change has been especially significant.

Barber will focus on the diagrams of Victor and Aladar Olgyay, architects and design methodologists teaching at MIT and Princeton in the 1950s. In the Olgyay's diagrams, the figure of the human is central - literally, drawn in the middle of their images, and conceptually, expressive of the new kinds of living that these architectures could allow. While these expressions were part of the renewed interest in humanism that pervaded architectural discussions in the post-war period, in our current context of anthropogenic climate change they read quite differently.

Reception and Lessons from Modernism: Environmental Design Considerations in 20th Century Architecture, 1925 - 1970 book launch to follow on the Alumni Roof Terrace.
