CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS | As part of the transformation of the Brooklyn Navy Yard into a green technology and sustainable manufacturing complex, ONE Lab, a new school for design and science, will establish a collaborative teaching facility and public outreach center for socio-ecological design, to open in 2015. The ONE Lab Smart Dock will located inside the Navy Yard's newly-renovated Building 128 -- an 84,000 square foot former shipbuilding factory, which is being transformed into a high-tech center for design, prototyping, and new manufacture. DESIGN COMPETITION | This international competition aims to rethink and redesign one of the most iconic streets in the world-42nd street in Midtown Manhattan. The competition is intended to encourage architects, planners, and urban designers from around the world to develop creative proposals for remaking this important but noisy, traffic-clogged street into an enhanced, world-class pedestrian environment and public space that is served by a high-quality, low-floor, modern surface light rail tram. CALL FOR PROPOSALS | Midtown Detroit, Inc. (MDI) in partnership with the New Economy Initiative (NEI) is seeking proposals to transform the undersides of two viaducts located in Midtown Detroit's TechTown district with public art and light. The Second and Cass Avenue viaducts are two fully operational railroad bridge grade separations located between Baltimore and Amsterdam Streets in TechTown. Originally constructed in 1934, these once magnificent viaducts have been poorly maintained over the years and lack adequate lighting, contributing to unsafe perceptions of the district.
