Commonly known as the "End of Year Show," this annual exhibition transforms the classrooms and studios of The Cooper Union into galleries showcasing work from the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture, the School of Art, and the Albert Nerken School of Engineering.


Exhibition Hours:
Tuesday - Saturday, 12 - 7pm
Closed Sundays and Mondays

Free and open to the public.

RE-THINKING THE FINAL REVIEW
School of Architecture 2013 Thesis

 
"It is the end of the academic year at The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture, when the fifth-year students present their final, year-long thesis projects. This year, the students and faculty decided to do things a little differently. Unlike years past, where each student's "proposal" has been presented and formally critiqued in the third floor lobby of the Foundation Building, that space, which students had spontaneously painted black some days before, was left empty as a poetic statement on the challenges faced by the institution.  Instead students have constructed a wooden table inside the colonnade that runs at ground level along the west side of the building.  Pedestrians looking in through the row of windows will see a single piece from each proposal laid out like a banquet.  On Wednesday, in place of critiques, students, faculty and guests were invited to engage in a group dialogue about the works, the approach to their presentation and their engagement with the world outside. ..."

The School of Architecture will offer 4-week intensive workshops in summer 2013 for college credit in introductory and advanced programs. These programs will introduce students to foundational concepts and practices within the study of architecture and explore the role of advanced digital technologies as a theoretical and formal determinate in contemporary architecture.

CALL FOR FELLOWS | The Design Trust embarks on plan to transform space under the city's elevated infrastructure with NYC Department of Transportation. Under the Elevated: Reclaiming Space, Connecting Communities will engage community leaders, planners, architects, artists, and cultural organizations to develop strategies to maximize the function, use, and spatial qualities of the millions of square feet of space underneath NYC's bridges, and elevated highways, subways, and rail lines. Fellowship opportunities include: Urban Design Fellow, Policy Fellow, and Graphic Design Fellow. Deadline: May 23, 2013


2013 PHOTO URBANISM FELLOWSHIP | In tandem with the Design Trust's new Under the Elevated project, they are also launching the 2013 Photo Urbanism fellowship to focus on "life under and around elevated infrastructure in New York City." The fellowship award includes a $5,000 cash prize and a book dedicated to the fellow's work published at the project's conclusion. THE DOT URBAN ART PROGRAM OPEN CALLS | The DOT is accepting proposals for public works and performances. Upcoming opportunities and deadlines include: Asphalt Art Activation Open Call for murals (Deadline: May 10, 2013); The next pARTners project seeks site-responsive temporary art works (Deadline: September 20, 2013); Arterventions Ongoing Open Call seeks to collaborate with organization-artist teams to present short-term interventions at a DOT owned and maintained site within the five boroughs; Summer Streets 2013 is accepting proposals for dance, music and theatrical performances along two planned stage routes. SUMMER EDUCATION VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY | The Center for Architecture is seeking volunteers for its week-long programs for children in grades 3-12. Programs begin June 17th and run through August 26th. Candidates should have a background in architecture, urban studies, art education or a related design field and experience working with or teaching children. An interest in helping children better understand the environment around them is our mission that we hope you can help us fulfill. 
 
STUDENT OPPORTUNITY: THE CHARLES E. PETERSON PRIZE | The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) of the National Park Service, The Athenaeum of Philadelphia and The American Institute of Architects (AIA) announce the 2013 Charles E. Peterson Prize, which annually recognizes the best set of measured drawings prepared to HABS standards and donated to HABS by students. Deadline: May 31, 2013  learn more ...
